Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
She died peacefully on Thursday 8th September 2022 at Balmoral, her Scottish estate.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on 21 April 1926 in London, the first child of Albert, Duke of York, second son of George V, and his duchess, the former Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on 21 April 1926 in London, the first child of Albert, Duke of York, second son of George V, and his duchess, the former Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
On the death of George V in 1936, his eldest son, known as David, became Edward VIII. At the end of the year he abdicated to marry a twice-divorced woman, Wallis Simpson.
After his brother's abdication, Elizabeth's father became King George IV.

In 1939, the 13-year-old princess accompanied the King and Queen to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth.
Together with her sister Margaret, she was escorted by one of the cadets, her third cousin, Prince Philip of Greece.

Philip Mountbatten was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark. His family were forced to flee* (*fuir) Greece when he was a baby, after a military coup.
Philip found refuge from a difficult childhood with his mother's family in England. He went to Gordonstoun, a Scottish boarding school.
