The Roaring Twenties were a time of both fun and violence. People were richer than before: they could buy cars. They had fun, danced, listened to jazz and went to the cinema. Women enjoyed a new freedom. But freedom was limited / restricted: alcohol was banned and gangsters smuggled it, so there was violence too.

The Harlem Renaissance This painting is Nightlife, by Archibald Motley. He was an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance movement (1910s to the 1930s). It was the flourishing of African American music, literature, and art. Artists represented the lives of Black people and the segregation they faced in the United States. In the 1920s, the American economy was prosperous, but inequalities were important, and Black people were very poor. The Harlem Renaissance was a militant movement for the emancipation of Black Americans. It began in the Harlem neighborhood in New York City, and later spread to Chicago. The main artists were Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald.
The mother of forensic science Frances Glessner Lee was a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories and she was inspired by the detective’s methods which consist in looking for clues, using reason, deduction, logic to solve a case. By observing these virtual crime scenes, detectives could learn how to find clues, how to canvass a crime scene. They could develop their observation capacities, their capacity to pay attention to details. She was the first woman to become a police captain in 1943: she was ahead of her time.
