01 Gamification
Gamification: definition
Gamification is the use of game-based mechanics, aesthetics and game thinking to engage people, motivate action, promote learning, and solve problems.
Kapp, 2012, p. 1
Kapp, K. M. (2012). The gamification of learning and instruction: Case-based methods and strategies for training and education. New York, NY: Pfeiffer.
Types of gamification
Structural gamification
Content gamification
Content gamification is the application of game elements, game mechanics and game thinking to alter content to make it more game-like
Structural gamification is the application of game-elements to propel a learner through content with no alteration or changes to the content.
Kapp, Blair & Mesch, 2013, p. 237

Gamified tests / quizzes
- Gamified tests are a type of structural gamification.
- We only add points and leaderboards to the tests, which are part of the so-called PBL (points, badges, and leaderboards).
- They basically cater for extrinsic motivation and therefore have little long term motivational effect if they are repeated often.
- They favour competitive "players".
Karl Kapp talks about PBL
Gamified tests / quizzes aim...
- to assess students' knowledge.
- to review any content worked previously.
- to evaluate students' understanding of the input provided at the end of a session
- to develop students' memory.
- to motivate students to learn using games.
Essential feature: instant feedback
ALTERNATIVE: tests can be designed and built by students themselves
