Where the blood goes
Kinzie Frey is a blood and platelet recipient. She was a six-year-old girl when she was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma. This is a kind of cancer that can form a tumor. Her tumor was all together around the size of a small basketball. It originated from her right adrenal gland and tangled around in her abdomen. It was wrapped around veins, arteries, and organs from her heart to her pelvis. They started chemotherapy and treatment as soon as the cancer was identified. After her second round of chemotherapy, she went through surgery to remove some of her stem cells. These stem cells were saved and returned to her after two more surgeries. This process took months before there was a complication. The stem cell transplant had started to make her body break down blood cells. She needed 46 red blood cell transfusions and 72 platelet transfusions in only a year and a half. Her mother, Holly Bosse, said, “If it weren't for the generosity of blood donors, Kinzie wouldn't be here with us today. Those blood donations aren’t only a gift to Kinzie but to our family, friends, and supporters."
Important Quotes
"You never know who you might be helping. It could be a friend or a family member who needs blood, and that's why it's so important...Every two seconds, someone needs blood, and that just shows the urgency." He said that the first time he donated he "was scared...but with the American Red Cross...you got nurses there. They can hold your hand. They can sort of get you through it, because as a macho football player, I was always afraid of needles." Jerry Rice stated that "just to be able to be a role model, to be able to give back off the football field with the American Red Cross is something that I'll never forget. I really felt proud after I gave blood." -Jerry Rice, Pro Football Hall of Famer.
"The American Red Cross blood supply is at historically low levels this winter, and we're facing a dangerous situation across the country. Without the blood they need, hospitals may be forced to make tough decisions about patient care. Donors are needed now to ensure blood is available for everyone who needs it when they need it. The good news is you can help! Make an appointment to give now." -American Red Cross on January 10th 2022.
