Quantifiers

I "quantificatori" sono una parte importante della grammatica inglese.

Possiamo raggruppare i quantificatori secondo la quantità che indicano.

Grande quantità >>> MUCH/MANY/A LOT OFQuantità indefinita >>> SOME/ANY Piccola quantità >>> A LITTLE/A FEW Piccolissima quantità >>> LITTLE/FEW

I quantificatori, o quantifiers, sono una o più parole, che si trovano prima dei sostantivi.

La loro presenza va a modificare il sostantivo dal punto di vista della quantità, come indica il loro stesso nome. Per poterli utilizzare correttamente bisogna distinguere i sostantivi numerabili da quelli non numerabili.

Gli UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS o nomi non numerabili non possono prendere il plurale, quindi NON possono essere preceduti da articolo A/AN o da un numero, ma possono essere preceduti da some/any/ much/a lot of/a little/little.

I COUNTABLE NOUNS o nomi numerabili possono prendere il plurale, essere preceduti da articolo A/AN o da un numero, possono essere preceduti da some/any/ many/a lot of/a few/few

Dobbiamo fare anche molta attenzione a seconda se li usiamo in frasi affermative, negative o interrogative.

In frasi affermative possiamo usare: A LOT OF (ma anche LOTS OF) SOME A LITTLE/A FEW LITTLE/FEW

Esempi: There are a lot of books on the table I have some exercises for tomorrow I am having a little tea and a few biscuits There is little milk There are few apples

In frasi negative possiamo usare:MUCH/MANY ANY A LITTLE/A FEW LITTLE/FEW

Esempi: You haven't got much homework There aren't many books on the table I haven't got any exercises for tomorrow I am not having a little tea and a few biscuits There isn't little milk There aren't few apples

In frasi interrogative possiamo usare:MUCH/MANY ANY SOME (nelle interrogative "di cortesia") A LITTLE/A FEW LITTLE/FEW

Esempi: Have you got much homework? Have you got any exercises for tomorrow? Would you like some coffee? Are you having a little tea and a few biscuits? Is there little milk? Are there few apples?
