Types of Imagery
definition
- a literary device that uses vivid description and appeals to readers’ senses to create an image or idea in their head.
- paints a picture and portrays a sensational and emotional experience
- Use figurative language
Visual Imagery
- qualities of how something looks visually. Examples: shapes, colors, light, shadow, or even patterns.
- Example: I am mesmerized by the shining sun on the crystalline waters. Shades of pastel pink and purple paint the sky.
Olfactory Imagery
- relates to smell and helps deliver the smell to the reader.
- Example: I allow the smoky air to guide me to paradise. The warm aroma of melted cheese and savory steak overpower my nostrils.
Gustatory Imagery
- appeals to the reader's sense of taste by describing something the speaker or narrator tastes.
- Example: My mouth waters as I see the savory, scrumptious steak grilling over a fire pit. An ice-cold soda swiftly slides into my throat.
Auditory Imagery
- the mental representation of any sound, allowing readers to feel a situation. (use onomatopoeia)
- Example: The birds’ chirp is music to my ears. Wild waves crash against the rocks.
Tactile Imagery
- describes what we feel or touch
- Includes temperature and texture.
- Example: Loose rocks pricked my feet like a million tiny thorns.
