The international dimension of the curriculum at Hazel
start
Aims of today's session
- Gain an understanding of global education and an overview of the international dimension of the curriculum at Hazel.
- Explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Consider how we can ensure meaningful links to the SDGs within our planning.
Global education emphasises the unity and interdependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultural diversity, affirmation of social justice and human rights, as well as building peace and actions for a sustainable future in different times and places.
The importance of a global education
- Our world is increasingly interconnected - just look at our school community.
- We don't know what the future holds - where will our pupils end up living and working?
- Enables pupils to understand links between their own lives and the lives of others around the world.
- Increases understanding of economic, cultural, political and environmental issues which shape our world (more on this later).
- Creates global citizens.
our international links
Year 3: Guadeloupe
Aim: to create real-life links with children in other parts of the French-speaking world.
Year 6: Senegal
Year 4: Reunion Island
Year 5: Rwanda
How can we continue to develop the international dimension throughout the school?
Year 5: Zero Hunger Project
UN Sustainable development goals
The result of years of work by the UN and adopted in September 2015 by over 193 different countries. Aim to achieve these by 2030.
How can we include these in our planning?
- Look for units of work which lend themselves to a particular goal (Geography in particualr lends itself well).
- Be explicit about what the goals are and which goal your unit focuses on.
- Consider how your plan might need adpating to allow pupils to explore the specific goal.
- Could you use a stand-alone unit to help introduce and explore the goal?
Make do and mend?
take some time to look over your planning and see how one (or more) Sustainable development goals could be explored.
