Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism

Bilingual Education in Colombia: Towards a Recognition of Languages, Cultures and Identities

According to the readings, it can be inferred that the Foundations of Bilingual Education and bilingualism are two very important axes for the study of languages, since it is a model that creates a relationship between language and school learning, taking into account aspects such as communities, geographic locations, etc. It can be said that there is a variety of positions on what bilingualism is, since it varies according to geographical location and other important aspects; it should be noted that bilingualism refers to when a person has the ability to engage in a conversation in a language other than their mother tongue with another individual and develop efficiently and effectively, making good use of language skills, it can also be said that there may be people who are semi-linguistic since their level to develop in a second language is reduced.

Introduction of the topic

It refers to a variety of elements that allow an individual to know a little more in depth the bilingualism with its characteristics, you can also know important terms that are presented in bilingualism, such as taking into account the linguistic ability and language skills when learning a second language, in the text is given to know clearly what are the deficiencies that occur when creating and executing a conversation, since you can learn a language and have certain problems or deficiencies when implementing what is known as a semi-lingual person.

Analysis of the readings

On the other hand, it is important to highlight the importance of the variety of conditions that are part of the learning process of a second language and this allows each individual to have different possibilities or methodologies when learning a language and therefore today to have a level between two languages is extremely important. Finally, it should be noted that many people learn this language as a survival model, which is why it is more complex when practicing it.

Definitions and distinctions

Definitions

Bilingualism: is when a person has the ability to carry out a conversation, taking into account that he/she must make use of two languages which is developed in a group or individual way. Elective bilingualism: It is when the person chooses to learn a language and develops it without losing the native language. Circumstantial bilingualism: This is when a person learns a language in order to survive in another country where he/she has just arrived and the language of that country is different from the native one. Linguistic competencies: These can be specific, observable and defined, for example: handwriting.

Definitions

Linguistic background: Refers to participatory and non-participatory experience. Functional bilingualism: Emphasizes participation in the linguistic domain. Semi-linguistic: Refers to when a person speaks two languages, but has a reduced vocabulary, incorrect grammar, little creativity, etc. Superficial fluency: It is when a person has the ability to continue with a conversation (it has a learning duration between 2 to 3 years). Linguistic competence: It is related to academics and takes into account the communicative skills and linguistic competence (it has a learning duration between 5 to 8 years).

Bilingual Visions: this is when a person can master two languages and is divided into two parts:*fractional view: It is the process by which bilinguals are evaluated as monolinguals in a single individual. *Holistic: Emphasizes that bilinguals are not the sum of two monolinguals, but have a unique linguistic profile. Linguistic Baggage differs from Functional Bilingualism in that baggage refers to gaining an experience through participation and non-participation, while functional bilingualism refers to the linguistic domain. According to Oller and Perkis (1980) there is only one facet of global linguistic competence. The idea is to differentiate linguistic competences.

Distinctions

Semilingual individuals may: Have problems because they did not learn to use the language correctly. Learn a second language for political purposes. Are limited and perform better in a certain subject. The tests implemented are only a small sample, as they are developed in a limited way and implement a standard language. They take into account those who fit according to a certain category. They are distinguished by taking into account the qualitative and quantitative parts when using the language.

Distinctions

Relevant aspects of the readings

Bilingualism:It may vary according to the situation lived in the place. It is when an individual can control two languages like a native speaker. An individual may be called bilingual when his or her linguistic level in a second language is minimal. It can be ambiguous and unpredictable and balanced bilingualism. It can be said that bilinguals tend to use two languages with different people and in different situations. Bilinguals can be stronger in each language according to their proficiency.

One-third of the population is bilingual to some degree.Language proficiency should be measured in terms of competencies. Language proficiency can change according to geographic or social location. Many people may have language proficiency but tend to be less fluent when communicating.

Relevant aspects of the readings

Finally, it can be inferred that the two readings give a broad study on the subject of bilingualism in both English and Spanish and also makes known which are the axes that influence either negatively or positively since there are many ways or circumstances that make people bilingual with a purpose or a specific objective and this causes them to learn irregularly or regularly well.
