INTRODUCTION
DEFORESTATION

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
INTRODUCTION
Habitat destruction is defined as the elimination or alteration of the conditions necessary for animals and plants to survive, not only impacts individual species but the health of the global ecosystem.
Previous studies have estimated that an area of forest as large as the UK is being lost each year, largely for timber or to make way for agriculture, such deforestation posing huge threats to wildlife and efforts to contain the climate crisis.
HABITAT LOSS
(Destruction,fragmentation,degradation)
Habitat destruction: Forest loss is mostly caused by the human with the expansion of agricultural land, intensive wood production for fuel and other forest products. Habitat fragmentation: Fragmentation happens when parts of a habitat are destroyed, leaving behind smaller unconnected areas. Habitat degradation: Caused by pollution, invasive species, and disruption of ecosystem.
DEFORESTATION
What is deforestation?
Deforestation is the constant cutting down of large amount of trees for the facilitation of human activities, and because of it there's always the concern of the loss of tropical rainfprests.
DEFORESTATION
- Deforestation spiked sharply last year, with losses concentrated in the vital rainforests in tropical areas.- Previous studies have estimated that an area of forest as large as the UK is being lost each year. -Trees are being felled and burned at a rapid rate in the Amazon, with more than 430,000 acres already lost in 2021.
Whats a rainforest? A rainforest is a dense forest that receives lots of rain every year. Rainforests are full of biodiversity and there are two types of them: tropical rainforests and temperate rainforests.
DEFORESTATION
Causes!
It is a serious environmental concern since it can result in :
loss of biodiversitydisturbances in the water cycle and damage natural habitats. soil erosion and climate change. It increases the green house gas emissions. it creates floods.
DEFORESTATION
Effects?
Loss of habitat-
Atmospheric effects-
cutting down trees, the carbon dioxide is released back, increasing the quantity of greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere.
temperature variation can result to the extinction of all species.
Atmospheric Water-
Flooding and Soil Erosion-
there is less water in the air to return to the soil. The result is dryer soil that eventually will no longer support agriculture.
Without the trees to prevent soil erosion, precious top soil erodes and washes away, leaving the land sterile and prone to flooding.
DEFORESTATION
SOME EXAMPLES ARE:
Although deforestation causes many problems, we can have a use of RAINFORESTS in a SUSTAINABLE way.!!!! Providing the need of the human population WITHOUT damaging the environment is SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
- Instead of cutting all the trees down, (clear-felling) ,just a small portion are cut down (selective felling). -The governments could refuse to grant licences to companies who wants to cut down valuable forest, however this might be difficoult. -Many trees can regrow after they are cut down, about 1 meter or less and left to grow (coppocing). -New ones should be planted to replace chopped trees, but these plants wont replace primary forests since they've never been cut down. -Education can surely help people to make them understand how important is to conserve forests.
OTHER CAUSES
Extraction of gases and oil (pollution)
Production of meat
- food production increases as the needs of our population
- needs lands where host animals
- requires a lot of resources like water, fertilizer and fossil fuel
- produces a large amount of methane
- Pollution alters our surrounding - air, water or soil
- It's problematic for animals adapted to live in a forest - higher soil temperatures, more wind and sunight, contaminate food, disruptd migartory pathways
OTHER CAUSES
Overhunting
Thrawling
- It's the most notourius reason for animal extinction
- Disrupts food chain causing an unbalanced ecosystem (animals and plants need eachother)
- Displaces seabed sediment, destroying the seafloor habitat
- Resuspended sediment lowers light level in the water
- will be also lost from the local ecosystem
- Prey species are depleted and larger fish suffer
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
- educate others and spread awareness
- support conservation agencies like the World Wildlife Fun, Wildlife conservation society and international fund for animal welfare
- re-develope wildlife by rebuildng lost habitats (EnvironmentBuddy)
- small actions: reuse, reduce and recyle!
FINAL QUIZ!!
- How do we define "habitat destruction"?
- How many type of "habitat loss" can we identify?
- Give one cause and one effect of deforastation
- Why overhunting damage
- the ecosystem?
