Movement of substances across a plasma membrane
Group 4: Anne, Evanjelina, Shazly, Afiqah, Dayang
Aim: To make colourful preserved eggs by apllying the concept of movement of subtances across a plasma membrane in daily life. Materials: Eggs, vinegar, food dye, distilled water Apparatus: Pot, bowl, glasses, spoon, plate
INTRODUCTION
Pickling is a method used to extend the shelf life of food. This is because food like egg does not last long and will start to rot due to bacteria or mold after a certain period of time. This will cause us to get sick such as diarrhea and food poisoning. That's why pickling method is widely adopted to reduce food wastage.
PROCEDURE/STEPS:
1. Wash the eggs.
5. Using a spoon, transfer the eggs into a bowl.6. Pour some vinegar . Then, wait for 10 minutes until bubbles are formed.
2. Heat the pot on medium heat. 3. After that, put 3 eggs in to the pot and let it boiled. 4. Turn off the heat.
9. After the eggs leaved for overnight, make sure to wash it throughly and don't forget to peel the eggshells.
7. Prepare 3 food dye solutioninto the glasses.
8. Place the eggs in eachglasses of food dye solution and leave it overnight.
The final result.
EXPlainantion
As you know, vinegar is an acid while eggshell is made of calcium carbonate. When the eggs are soaked in vinegar, the eggshells will react with vinegar and dissolve. The calcium carbonate will become carbon dioxide gas, that's why effervesce can be observed. Therefore, the eggs are dyed due to the movement of food dye across the semi-prmeable membrane.
From this project and experiment, we get to witness the effect of vinegar dissolving the eggshells which allowed the food dye to dfiffuse through the semi-permeable membrane. This project also helped us to understand the importance of the movement of subtance across the semi-peremable in daily life.
