Managing Behaviour • Clearly communicate expectations to all learners. • Support learners to take ownership of their own behaviour. • Consistently challenge substandard behaviours. • Be a positive role model for behaviour at all times. Clear Instructions • Break down tasks to increaser learner participation (step by step using simple language and using images to support understanding of the information). • Take time to re-cap learning from previous sessions and/or activate background knowledge. • Make sure learning objectives and success criteria is clearly explained (consider different formats of presenting this information). Effective Planning • Ensure that resources are well planned, innovative and utilise technology where possible. • Plan sessions/topics so that each stage builds the learners capacity incrementally and supports them by building on prior knowledge (activate prior learning and contextualise the learning). • Think about what your goal is and how you can support skills development through the session. • What scaffolding or supports can you provide? E.g. resources to help with planning and organising a piece of work or to provide differing levels of aid to a learner with a task. Teaching Strategies • Promote active learning by designing activities that suitably challenge all learners (not all learners need the same task to reach the same learning outcome e.g. research, practical exploration). • Link learning to learners’ own experiences and provide opportunity for transferring this to other contexts. • Use varied language – different contexts and at different levels to cater for the range of abilities. • Provide opportunities for independent learning, group work and peer support. • Consider ICT – Would a learner benefit from screen readers, headphones etc.
