METALS-PLUTONIUMNON-METAL-SILICON

METALS-PLUTONIUM

Plutonium isn’t of much use in any application due to its radioactive nature. One of the main applications of this element is as a source of energy. It was used in the first atomic bombs. The element is used in nuclear weapons as it is a key fissile component and because of its easier availability and ease of fission.

One of its isotope Plutonium-239 is used in new generation nuclear weapons..

NON-METALS-SILICON

1)The element is a major constituent in ceramics and bricks.2) Being a semiconductor, the element is put into use for making transistors3)Silicon is widely used in computer chips and solar cells. 4)It is a vital component of Portland cement. 5)Silicon is used in the production of fire bricks. 6)Several waterproofing systems employ silicones as a component. . 7)It is also a component of ferrosilicon – an alloy widely used in the steel industry.

8)Silicon is used in many mould release agents and moulding compounds

MEANINGS and facts

  1. Fissile-(of an atom or element)able to undergo nuclear fission.
  2. Nuclear Fission is a reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei
  3. Portland Cement is a commonly used cement
  4. Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon
  5. Plutonium is used as fuel in Nuclear Bombs

Solar cells are semi-conductor devices which use sunlight to produce electricity

6.Isotopes are two or more types of atoms that have the same atomic number and position in the periodic table, and that differ in nucleon numbers due to different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei.
