01 WunderGrubs, Inc.: How it All Began
Founders: Akissi Stokes and Karim Nelson
WunderGrubs, Inc. was founded on the basis of tackling food insecurity. Founders Akissi Stokes and Karim Nelson were inspired by the devastations in Haiti following the catastrophic earthquake of 2010, where there was little to no usable, arable land for agriculture. Stokes and Nelson then began to brainstorm ways to produce sustainable protein that could be grown with little water, land, and feed.

Why Mealworms?
02
The grubs require little to no water to survive, and only use 10% of agricultural land compared to other livestock. The grubs also have more protein and less fat than chicken, beef, or pork. The Georgia weather is perfectly suitable for their living conditions, as some other alternatives that Stokes tried, like silkworms, were not able to sustain the Georgia heat and humidity.

While WunderGrubs, Inc. already has several sites set up around Atlanta, Akissi and Karim don’t want to stop there. The WunderGrubs, Inc. product has the potential to alleviate the problem of food insecurity in any population, and with the easy establishment and low-maintenance qualities of mealworm farming, the founders are working on teaching small farmers to grow their own mealworms and create sustainable food sources of their own. Looking forward, Akissi and Karim are currently working on expanding overseas to the Republic of Cameroon with hopes to expand to other countries around the world.
