Introduction

As a team consisting of Amoyah Ebanks and Vanica Cochrane, we have pooled our ideas and new knowledge together to create a resource kit that targets the inclusive classroom. The kit consists of four different resources for four different disabilities: Video (Autism), Math Charts and counters (Dyscalculia), a Game (ADHD) and an Interactive Animated Dictionary (Intellectual Disability). The different activities listed above can be used in grades 2-3,7, and 10 in the subject areas of Business, Mathematics and Social Studies. A manual guide is provided for each resource to help the students understand what is required of them and how they are able to use the resources. Along with a rationale outlining the reason why each resource was selected for the disability.

Autism

Level 1 - High Functioning Autism - This is the least severe form of autism, generally considered “mild autism.” Children with level 1 autism may struggle in social situations and raise concerns about restricting or repetitive behaviours, yet require limited assistance to perform their daily activities ("Level 1 autism: Symptoms | Autism Resources", 2022).Grade 10 - Principles of Business - Functions and responsibilities of Management. Autism can be defined as a developmental disability which is caused by differences in the brain which affect a person's social skills, and communication both verbal and nonverbal as they may have repetitive behaviours. According to Koons (2021) “showing interactive videos help students with autism spectrum interact with their peers” as we know this is a challenge for them. So with a video highlighting social interaction among peers will help students interact with both peers and teachers alike. The video shown may also peak the interest of the student which would inspire him/her to learn and interact with everyone when a discussion about the video has begun. Also, it will help build their vocabulary as they hear the different discussions.

Manual

Each lesson the teacher will use the Doodle app or any other video application to create videos for the class. The teacher can then inform the students of what to look for in the video then play the video once or twice to allow the students to take notes and share their feedback from the video.

Have a class discussion and invite participants.

Introduce the topic to the students

Share the focus question, give time to note the questions

Play the video, preferable twice to allow them to take note

Special LearningDisabilities - Dyscalculia

Level - Type 1 - Developmental Dyscalculia - Where students exhibit a marked discrepancy between their developmental level and general cognitive ability as it pertains to Mathematics. As a basic indicator of developmental dyscalculia students will perform below expectations with no obvious explanation (e.g. general ability, emotional state or illness) available ("Dyscalculia | National Council for Special Education - CPD and In-School Support", n.d.). Grade 2-3 Interactive Math Chart and Counters

Math Chart

Rational

Rational

The practical math chart was specially designed to assist students with dyscalculia, as we know dyscalculia is a condition that affects student's ability to understand numbers which leads to students not being able to solve math problems, reason questions etc. According to Dr Farrell (n.d.) “Using concrete apparatus helps give the pupil experience and understanding of what is being done and a pupil with mathematics disorder may require consolidation using concrete items longer than most pupils” all of these can help a student develop an understanding of the math question. So with the development of the math chart students will be able to work at their own pace while enjoying the instrument produced, also it gives rise for them to actively participate. According to Teaching Expertise (n.d) “ by trying to make mathematics enjoyable through the use of games etc can help reduce anxiety and help students be more relaxed so they can concentrate”.

Manual

The chart created to assist with addition will be laminated and placed on the wall of a designated area in the classroom. When it is math time students will be asked to gather closest to the wall and gather the counters that are placed in a box. When asked to complete one of the questions (eg. 4+4= ?) students will now gather the counters and take out the necessary amount of counters required to complete the question. The counters will help the students to practice counting and this will help them to answer the questions correctly. Positive reinforcement will be used as we will have a chart with each student's name and as the students continue to get a question correct we will put a star by their name, when a student gets an answer incorrect he or she will be encouraged by the teacher and students to practice more as well as help will be given.

First Step

Gather around the Math chart

Second Step

Gather Counters

Third Step

Take from the box the number of counters needed for each side

Forth Step

Then Count all of the counters together

ADHD

Level - Moderate - Students with moderate level display inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are neither mild or severe (Braaten, PhD, n.d.). Grade 7 - Mathematics - Algebra

Game

Rational

Students that are diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble concentrating on tasks assigned to them as ADHD is a brain disorder that affects how a person behaves, as it causes hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour. With that in mind when selecting tasks for them a teacher would want to focus on the things that can keep them occupied throughout the lesson. A Mario game was chosen to assist with teaching grade 7th students algebra, as students with ADHD it is very important to grab their attention and a game will do just that. According to Wheeler (2020), “games can help children build important skills such as strategy and problem-solving, time management, collaboration, hand-eye coordination etc”. As a teacher, this is our aim to have our students fully engaged in the lesson process and interact, it is believed that they will be engaged throughout the session, especially with the action from the game character and the questions posed.

Manual

In each lesson, the teacher can incorporate game activities for the students to keep engaged and focused while learning. Click on the link to open the game then click the start icon to play the game. Each correct answer will allow you to advance while each incorrect answer will let you lose a life (heart), if you lose all three (3) lives (hearts) before reaching the top to capture the poll then you will have to restart. If the quest is completed you will advance to level 2 and your lives (hearts) will be renewed.

Intellectual Disability

Level - Mild Intellectual Disability - A majority of people with intellectual disability experience a mild to moderate form. They can learn practical life skills and function daily with minimal support. However, they might struggle to understand how things work and develop social skills.Grade 7 - Social Studies Interactive Animated Dictionary

I.A. Dictionary

Manual

Rational

Oftentimes going to school we had challenges understanding basic concepts or terms used by our teacher in lessons. Now just imagine a student with an intellectual disability wouldn't have challenges learning new terms and concepts. According to Young and MacCormack (2014) “students who decide to listen to a digital version of a book bypass an area of difficulty while if students decide to look at the computer as highlighted words are read aloud can learn unfamiliar words” this information basically agree that interactive animated dictionary can assist students with intellectual disability to understand unfamiliar words through the different features available this will benefit them along with allowing the teacher to move ahead with the lesson. According to Students with an Intellectual Disability (5 Methods to Help) - Classful (n.d.), and Colclasure .C et al., (2019) intellectually disabled students learn best when the following characteristics are incorporated into the teaching process: hands-on, visuals, step by step, repetition, and audio. All the characteristics mentioned are included in the interactive animated dictionary.

Manual

Each week's topic would be addressed in the Interactive Animated Dictionary. The teacher can inform the pupils of the weekly topic ahead of time so that they can do research before class. The teacher will the follow the steps below to use the Interactive Animated Dictionary to interact with the students while teaching the lessons.
