STAGES
IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Cooing (6-8 weeks old)
The first sounds produced by the baby, where they can "learn" about their vocal cords through pronunciations such as 'co', 'go', 'ga ga', etc.
Pre-Talking (0-6 months)
At this stage the child or infant is not yet able to speak, but begins to understand different words that he/she can use to help him/her with his/her needs or interests. ex. begin to understand facial expressions, gestures, imitations, etc.
Babbling (6-9 months)
Repetition of sounds or syllables produced by the infant without specific meaning. May be considered as a baby jargon or "nonsense speech". ex. mamama (mommy, mamá), dadada
Holophrastic (9-1.5 years old)
At this stage infants are able to produce one-word sentences so that they can express what they may need or want according to their needs. Some of the sounds could be similar to babbling. ex. "water" "bottle"
Two-words (1.5-2 years old)
At this stage the child is able to produce two-word sentences that are usually more understandable or complementary than the one-word sentences mentioned above, which demonstrates the great progress they can make in their vocabulary. ex. "mommy milk" "mamá agua"
Telegraphic (2-2.5 years old)
Partly similar to the two-word stage, the child is able to formulate sentences of 2 or more words, where little consideration is given to whether the sentences are correct or not, as they are usually short. ex. "mommy more milk" "mamá más comida"
Later Multiword (2.5 years old and beyond)
From this stage on, children are able to communicate in a more specific way compared to the previous stages. They also begin to develop better grammar and vocabulary techniques.
