PROBLEM- Euston station lacking an excellent design

- The station has been refered to for having a 'gloomy atmosphere and sterile public realm'.-It's design is described as unaesthetically pleasing from a passengers' perspective, having a negative impact on their travelling experience.

solution- securing excellent design

- Euston station will have an open-plan design to ensure a clear, spacious interior to welcome passengers. - Glass will make up a large proportion of the building materials, to maximise the amount of natural lighting in the station, contradicting the gloomy interior it's previous design had. - A variety of different design structures and shapes will be used in the architecture of the station to produce a more eye-catching, unique design.

PROBLEm- lacking efficIent use of space

- Euston station is considered the sixth busiest railway station in Britain, serving over 71 million of the population annually. In addition, it was ranked 11th out of 53 for the busiest railway stations in Great Britain on the National Rail Network from 2022 data.- Due to this, public responses have highlighted a lack of efficient use of space, due to the station often becoming crampt, busy and overwhelming, even more so at rush hours. This has contributed to increased stress levels for passengers. - Also, the high volume of passengers have led to members of the public reporting a lack of facilities which suit their needs.

solution- having an eFficient use of space

-Multiple exits and entrances to the station will be implemented to avoid cramped conditions from the moment passengers enter Euston. -Low-level bollards will be installed to reduce heavy passenger flow at these busy areas, decreasing the likelihood of hazards such as social conflicts. These will be plant- based to promote sustainability, rather than metal. -Multi-level railway platforms will be installed to maximise efficient passenger flows from different areas of the station, rather than having the maximum passenger capacity in one crampt area. - A range of cafes, restaurants and small shops will be located on both levels of Euston station for leisure and the convenience of passengers. - More toilet fascilities will be accessible on each platform.

PROBLEM- Euston station not boosting the local and national economy as effectively as possible

- Despite having a large space, there are not enough cafes or shops to support the high volume of passengers.-This means that there are fewer local job opportunities available within the station.

solution- boosting the local and national economY

- More cafes and shops will be set up in Euston station. Due to the increase in businesses, it allows these organisations to thrive from investment which has a positive knock on effect on the economy. -More local job opportunities are available through the increase in businesses and also by increased recruitment of staff at reception areas within the station to offer navigation aid. This will increase employment levels in the area, further boosting the economy.

PROBLEM- Euston station lacking sustainable development and a sustainable design

-Currently, there are not enough waste disposal areas within Euston station which can lead to the station becoming an unclean area, negatively impacting customer experience and satisfaction. -There are not enough toilet fascilities to suit the large proportion of the population using Euston station. - The public have exclaimed that the accessibility of Euston station is restricted for certain individuals. -Members of the public have said that they want the inclusion of more green infrastructure to Euston station's new design, due to the increasing air pollution levels.

solution- giving euston station a sustainable design

-There will be an increase in recycling bins and waste disposal areas to prevent Euston station becoming an unclean, unhygienic environment. - Social sustainability will be promoted through increased diversity and equity by including more gender neutral toilets and disabled toilets in the interior design, as well as more toilet fascilities in general. -Options for travelling around the station will include buggy transport for the elderly and those with health requirements, who may struggle to move around the station quickly and efficiently. - To improve air quality, green blocks and green walls will be implemented into the redesign process of Euston station, which will also contribute to the station's aesthetic.

PROBLEM- negative impacts on the enviroNment of euston road

- Euston Road has experienced increased traffic congestion due to passengers travelling to and from Euston station. This has led to a decrease in cycling in the local area, often due to cyclists feeling unsafe when travelling on these busy roads. Therefore, cycling is Euston's lowest mode of transport. - Also, air pollution surrounding Euston station is increasing from many passengers using taxi's near the area.

solution- improving the environment of euston road and encouraging sustainable travel

- More cycling lanes can be made so people feel safer to cycle on busy roads, encouraging passengers to cycle to Euston station and around the Euston area. This will reduce the volume of CO2 emissions released along Euston road.- Also, to enforce sustainable transportation solutions, the LifeCYCLE charity can work with schools and organisations in the Euston area to help get more of the population cycling around the local area. - A designated car park area will be made alongside the station from the unused area of land seen on the left. This will be for taxi's, in order to reduce traffic congestion and, hence, help the flow of traffic along Euston Road.

PROBLEM- lack of sustainable travel

- There is a lack of sustainable travel on a more social aspect, due to passengers struggling to navigate around a station as large and busy as Euston.

solution- sustainable travel

- More sign posts, maps of routes and reception areas will be located throughout the station so passengers have a clearer idea of where they are going, and can ask people at reception for navigation aid. This will reduce passenger's stress levels, having a positive impact on their experience at Euston Station. - Also, train announcements will be in subtitles and in sign language using technology, as well as being spoken, so that all passengers can independantly navigate around the station if they choose to. This increases equality and diversity of passenger's experiences, contributing to sustainable travel from a social point of view.

PROBLEM- lacking sustainable managemEnt

- Electricity is used to power Euston Station, rather than renewable energy alternatives, contributing to global warming and climate change.

solution- creating sustaiNable management

- Renewable energy like solar power will be used to provide most of Euston station's power to reduce the effects of climate change. This renewable energy approach is similar to the Edinburgh-based 7N station design, which was awarded the best station design that considers the needs of passengers and local communities.

cross-section of regenerated Euston station

AIMS- The redeveloped station will help to reconnect the communities to the north, south, east and west. This is significant due to the public stating that Euston Station has previously created a barrier between SomersTown and King's Cross in the East, followed by Regents Park Estate and Regents Park in the West. -New businesses, shops, new and improved public realm and open space will transform the area.
