Framing the action is an important aspect of cinematography. Selecting an appropriate camera position and lens will help to capture the information needed to tell the story your director wants to tell. Something as simple as raising or lowering the camera can have a dramatic impact on the way the audience perceives a particular character.How you compose the information within the scene will not only determine whether the picture is pleasing to look at, but will also direct the audience to important action, it will set mood, help to reveal subtext and provide an aspect of story that otherwise may not exist.

An important thing to consider when approaching any shot is that the camera can only see what the lens is pointed at. Whereas our eyes canscan all information we look at, the lens has four sides that constrain the viewer's eye. For this reason, it is important that you study your monitor carefully to ensure the image works within the boundaries of the frame.

Rule of thirds

This is one of the most frequently referred to framing 'rules' when it comes to photography and videography, however t is less of a rule and more of a guide for composing information in the frame.The rule of thirds divides the frame into three both horizontally and vertically. These lines are then used to position key elements, with important information typically being positionedwhere the grid lines intersect.

Generally, information framed in the centre of the frame looks a bit awkward and can make for an unattractive image. It is importantto balance elements in the frame, and to give elements breathing room. When it comes to framing people, it is often the case thatthey are positioned on one of the vertical lines, with their eye-line gazing into the open frame.

The 'Fibonacci Sequence' is a mathematical sequence where each number is dictated by the sum of the two previous numbers,starting with 0 and 1 e.g.0 + 1 = 11 + 1 = 21 + 2 = 32 + 3 = 53 + 5 = 85 + 8 = 138 + 13 = 2113 + 21 = 34...and so on.

This grid produces a similar pattern to the rule of thirds with a strong vertical line (on the right hand third) and a strong horizontal line (between the right of the frame and the vertical line). The curved shape represents a path for the viewer's eye, and therefore elements in the frame are composed to guide the viewer around the image.
