Perceptions and behaviors of Students in Conversation encounters

Integrating the culture of inquiry into the teaching profession “Teaching skills and strategies for affective and effective communication in learning processes in virtual environments”

The research purpose of the study

The research purpose of the study was to inquire about the perceptions and behaviors of the internship students and their experience with an online practical English conversation course. Using synchronous and asynchronous communication technology, the instructor and the students met once per week in the online environment to participate in the discussion on different topics and questions related to the practical experience of communication in English, using a methodology of solving problems in online environments. There were 4 groups in charge, twice a week synchronic encounter.

THE TEACHING ROLE IN COMMUNICATION

The teaching role consists of facilitating the learning process and has a double function: developing technological pedagogical mediations, as well as establishing motivational communication processes with their students. The student needs someone to guide him and, above all, to make him feel that he is not alone, hence the importance of considering maintaining effective and constant communication with the teacher to integrate the student into a new learning environment for him. (Quintero E. 2012), Mora (2010) establishes that: communication in a virtual environment is a key aspect that will define the proper development of activities.

Research Process Performed Practicum Online Environments

For this session, the moment of the initial activity was implemented with the design actions for the didactic encounters sequence that respond to the development and learning characteristics by establishing debating actions of intrinsic order, recovering previous notions about previous learning in the apprentices, according to what is proposed for this session, taking into account the educational needs in communication of the participants in order to achieve the expected learning.

By establishing and clarifying basic communication structures, a greater fluidity in the organization of ideas to be expressed in English is obtained as a consequence, with the use of the suggested materials in the planning, distribution and organization of space, organization of participants in pairs in virtual learning environments, thus facilitating the implementation of dialogues and point of view from what is proposed for this session.

CONCLUSIONS AND FINDINGS

Based on the analysis that I carried out and taking into account the aspects that I consider to be the intervention strengths of the research project and its practical implementation in virtual environments, the communication needs of the students were established, an objective, sequential, conscious and advanced with a spirit of challenge, suitability and ethical commitment, seeking in this sense, to put into practice various tactics to optimize factors of time and space, as well as particular characteristics and needs of each student, thus optimizing the meetings and technological resources available; considering the need to improve in phonetic aspects and grammatical composition, how to identify the specific challenges given in the encounters.

What is debating?A debate is a structured contest over an issue or policy. There are two sides - one supporting (PRO), one opposing (CON). Benefits of debating include: Allowing you to think about aspects and perspectives you may not have considered. Encourages you to speak strategically. Improving public speaking skills. Learning how to create a persuasive argument. When you have to argue against your personal view you realize that there are two sides to the argument.

Debate structure There are multiple formats a debate can follow; this is a basic debate structure:  A topic is chosen for each debate - this is called a resolution or motion. It can be a statement, policy, or idea. The motion is usually a policy which changes the current state of affairs or a statement which is either truth or false.  There are two teams of three speakers: o The Affirmative team supports the statement (PRO team) o The Negative team opposes the statement (CON team)

Debate structure  Sometimes you will be asked to take a position in the debate but in other debates you will be allocated your position.  Teams are provided with time to prepare (for Task 3 it will be 10 minutes). Each speaker presents for a set amount of time (for Task 3, it will be 2 minutes).  Speakers alternate between the teams, usually a speaker in the Affirmative team starts, followed by a Negative speaker, then the second Affirmative speaker presents, followed by the second Negative speaker etc.

Conclusions

Thus achieving the purposes that were proposed because the students who signed up to be part of the project had the will and the path to achieve proposed goals in improving communication skills. Although the main difficulties in the implementation of my proposal were not major and had to do with the time factor, they could be overcome due to their willingness and commitment to the program.
