The librarian I talked to mentioned one issue with the database access for students at our school. Our school has the IB program and draws many students out of the city to attend. Additionally, we neighbour a small city without a high school - so those students (that do not live in Surrey) attend our school as well. The librarian clarified that the SPL access to databases is currently only for Surrey residents with a Surrey library card.
Although I work for the largest school district in BC, it does not mean we have access to every possible database! The Surrey Public Library can fill the gaps as they offer numerous databases that our district does not offer. (And conversely, the school district offers some that the library does not!)EBSCOhost and Explora are examples of databases that are accessible both by the school district and the public library.
The SPL offers the Masterfile database and access to Creative Bug, Kanopy, LinkedIn Learning, etc.

E-books
Libby App
To access E-books and audiobooks from the SPL, I would recommend the Libby App to students (it is also endorsed by SPL!) I use it personally and best of all, it’s free! You connect your library card to the app and you have access to all e-books and audiobooks from your local library at your fingertips. You can filter by “juvenile” or “young adult” for students. Best of all, no more late fees because the books auto-return!
Author visits
Author visits
The Surrey Public Library hosts author visits during the school year. (Usually not during the summer). The Semiahmoo branch does not have a big meeting space (max 60 occupants) so they prefer doing virtual author visits. The link is open to schools and the general public so they can attend the virtual author visits as well. You must sign up online to attend. Keep your eye out on the events page for the next author visit!

print collection
The Semiahmoo Branch has one of the largest print collection for children in the entire city of Surrey. The teen selection is not as big but still of a decent size. It reflects the demographics of the young families living in this area.
- Joy from Semiahmoo Branch
Children's Section
The books are kept on short shelves that offer a space for book covers at the top - a good height for children.

Technology
Technology
There are free computers, scanners, printers and WIFI at the Semiahmoo branch. There are 12 computers available in a computer room (no time limit). There are 20 computers throughout the main library which have a 90 minute maximum (but extensions are allowed). Library cards are required but if you don't have one, they will provide a guest pass for you. Computers are not as frequently used at this branch (in comparison to a branch like Central City) but the printers are well-used. Mobile printing service means you can submit print jobs from you own device from anywhere! (20 cents bw, 40 cents colour)

Connection to Surrey schools
Connection to local schools
I was very pleased to learn that the Surrey Public Library is well connected to Teacher Librarians in our district. The librarian I spoke to mentioned that they are in contact with school TL's to promote events at the library such as summer reading club, workshops, and reading buddies. Whether or not the TL promotes it at their school is up to them of course. The library also recruits many of their library volunteers by promoting the positions to TLs.
Can the public library extend and enhance my school library program?
The answer is a resounding YES! As you can see in this presentation, the Surrey Public Library provides many services that benefit our students. From providing a space to grow, books to read, databases to research, and fun events - the SPL has something for every child. Year-round, the SPL offers so much that compliments our school library program. I am especially grateful for them during the summer as students can visit a library even when school is closed. I spent many happy childhood hours at the library - and I hope that all kids in the future will continue to know this joy.
Thanks!
