Challenges in General
- The freedom of expression of Filipino artists is being restricted, and thus unconventional ideas are not accepted. Filipino artists are forced to produce similar work simply because it sells. Their full potential is never recognized because higher-ups tell them what to do.
- Philippine art has been greatly influenced by the colonial mentality of the Filipino people, which manifests itself as an immediate affinity for anything that is foreign and rejection for locals.
- Filipino artists lose interest in making art because they would rather choose a job that could provide them with a steady income. This is because the value of art in the Philippines is low, and businesses and corporations only hire well-known artists rather than accepting new artists.
Challenges that the Philippine Art is Facing
Challenges During the Pandemic
- The immediate effects of the pandemic included a lack of sales by artists and difficulties in obtaining materials due to both logistical and financial issues. Not only artists are affected, but everyone involved in the art world, including companies, organizers, and advertisers. The pandemic has forced the cancellation of numerous art fairs and exhibitions worldwide, not just in the Philippines.
- Art spaces in the country have been forced to temporarily close due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Even after the mandatory quarantine protocols were lifted, art galleries and museums may still not be able to fully open their doors because they are considered "non-essential" by the national government. It has sparked discussions and debates about pressing issues like the welfare of artists and cultural workers and the effects it will have on for-profit and non-profit art spaces.
