functions /what is melatonin?

history of pineal gland.

There is a long and culturally diverse history regarding the pineal gland most of which have been highly mystical. Famously, Descartes (1596–1650) regarded the pineal gland as the point of contact between the soul, body, and the place where our thoughts are formed.

Other extraordinary speculations include those of pharaonic Egypt, where the pineal was equated with the eye of Horus [13]. Additionally, the “third eye” of Hindu spiritual enlightenment is described as originally being a third eyeball that atrophied into the pineal gland

(showing the pineal gland and its connections to the nervous system. Note the nerves of the arm and optic nerves having connections to the enlarged pineal gland)

René Descartes (1596–1650) was a creative mathematician of the first order, an important scientific thinker, and an original metaphysician. During the course of his life, he was a mathematician first, a natural scientist or “natural philosopher” second, and a metaphysician third

what is pineal gland?

-The pineal gland, conarium, or epiphysis cerebri, is a small endocrine gland in the brain of most vertebrates. -The pineal gland produces melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone which modulates sleep patterns in both circadian and seasonal cycles. -The shape of the gland resembles a pine cone, which gives it its name. -The pineal gland is located in the epithalamus, near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where the two halves of the thalamus join. -Nearly all vertebrate species possess a pineal gland.

(extra ) How does melatonin affect reproductive parts in female? Clinical studies have demonstrated that melatonin treatment for infertile women increases intra-follicular melatonin concentrations, reduces intra-follicular oxidative damage, and increases the chances of pregnancy.

Melatonin is a hormone that helps to regulate the start of your period and the length of your cycle. For this reason, changes in melatonin levels can affect your cycle. You may find your periods delayed, or they might skip a month altogether.

2-functions of melatonin.

1) The involvement of nocturnal melatonin secretion in initiating and maintaining sleep, control the day/night melatonin rhythm of the timing of other 24-hour rhythms

2) In addition to improving sleep, melatonin is also involved in managing immune function, blood pressure and cortisol levels . Plus, it acts as an antioxidant, with some research finding that it can significantly affect many health conditions.

circadian rythm.

A circadian rhythm, or circadian cycle, is a natural, internal process that regulates the sleep–wake cycle and repeats roughly every 24 hours. It can refer to any process that originates within an organism and responds to the environment

how is pineal gland related to circadian rhythm?

Circadian rhythms are the daily rhythms of the body, including signals that make someone feel tired, sleep, wake up, and feel alert around the same time each day. The pineal gland secretes melatonin , which is a hormone that helps regulate circadian rhythms.

levels of the hormone cortisol dip at bedtime and increase during the night, peaking just before waking. This acts like a wake-up signal, turning on our appetite and energy.(that is why in early days also it was advised to sleep timely and wake before the sunset )

3PM SLUMP-Our natural rhythm tells us to sleep twice; once at midday and once at night. This is why so many European and Asian cultures observe an afternoon (it depends upon circadian rythm)

FACTS.

problems with the hypothalamus — including cancer, growths, or hormonal issues — can cause pineal gland dysfunction. pineal gland doesnot work much in lower organisms-cold blooded animals.

Jet lag occurs because crossing multiple time zones puts your internal clock (circadian rhythms), which regulates your sleep-wake cycle, out of sync with the time in your new locale.

thanks for watching.
