Year 6 - The Witchcraft Ordeals

This week in Year 6 history...

We have been considering Witchcraft. Last week we learned what the sterotypical Witch looked like and why she was an old, poorer women (due to the stigmas within society). This week, we learned how Witches were proven to be workers of the devil and forced to confess thanks to Witchfinder General Mathew Hopkins and his ordeals

Ordeal by...

Fire

Water

Sleep

If sentences to 'Ordeal by Fire' you would be forced to walk bare foot across hot coals and hold a burning rod. You would then have your wounds bandaged and left for 3 days. If healed then God was on your side, if festering, the devil be your allie

If 'Ordeal by Water' is chosen then you will be tied from wrist to foot and put into a river. You'll be pushed under with a stick. If you float then you are using your Witch powers to save you and you'll be killed. If you drown then you are innocent and your soul can rest with God

There are two 'Ordeals by Sleep' in one, you are forced to stay awake until you go mad and simply confess. In the other, while you are asleep, Witnesses watch you get stabbed and yet not bleed or even wake! Because you're a Witch (and the blade is retractable!)

Year 6 - The Witchcraft Ordeals

During the lesson...

Each table worked together to act as a small village in Essex (the height of Hopkins trials were here). Everyone is starting to feel that Hopkins is a fake, just accusing Witches for his 20 shillings. That means any of you could be his next victim. Your challenge is to warn the village next door about Hopkins and his ordeals before he arrives but they cannot hear you from where you are so you must warn them through charades! - Each table had an ordeal that they needed to act out to the other tables. The other tables had not even learned of that ordeal yet and they had to guess what was going on. Below is some pictures of the results.
