Mission 1 - harry returns

Ronnie, tiring, was hard pressed, and although he could not be wounded by arrows or blades, he could be hindered by the sheer weight of men around him, and now he slashed desperately, his arms heavy, as Croatoan and his henchmen surrounded him and began to close the circle around him, seemingly caring little for their own safety, and wishing only for the scalp of their nemesis. Numberella fared little better, and though she fired her laser cannon again and again, there always seemed to be another feathered warrior to take the place of the ones she felled. And then suddenly, she heard a voice: “Lie down, Numberella. Lie Down. Lie DOWN, Numberella.” And without knowing why she did it, she threw herself onto the floor of the forest.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ronnie lying down too, and then a volley of arrows tore through the air above them, thwacking into the backs and chests of their enemies. Another volley, and above their heads all they could hear were the desperate screams of Croatoan and his men as they were cut down from behind. Now, there were beams of light, coming from all around, first from the left, then again, fifty yards away on the right cutting down man after man. “Harry! Harry!” cried Numberella, tears of relief coursing down her cheeks, and in her head she again heard his voice: “It will not be long now, Numberella, I have returned, and all will be well.” It did not take long. From all around them more and more natives of another tribe descended, firing their arrows into the remnants of Croatoan’s crew until none of them were left standing.

Two dead warriors fell on top of Ronnie as he fought his way through the attackers. He managed to fling them aside, estimating their weights to be 80 kg and 82 kg. What was the combined weights of Ronnie’s attackers?

Mission 2 - deliverance

Harry, dressed in full native American clothing strode forward into the centre of the clearing, a bloody tomahawk in his raised hand, whooping wildly. Standish, bleeding from a gash in his face, but otherwise unharmed, rushed over to Numberella and helped her up. “I don’t know who they are, or why they are not trying to kill us – but they have saved our lives for certain.” “It’s Harry,” said Numberella, crying with relief. “It’s Harry Hijack, our friend!” Then from out of the woods, joining Harry in the middle of the clearing, came another figure.

“Massasoit!” said Numberella. And so it was – the same noble features, the long, hooked nose, the black eyes, and the hint of a smile around the lips as he joined hands with Harry and together they raised their axes in the air. All around them came the whoops of the warriors, and the pilgrims joined in, raising their arms and whooping jubilantly, amazed and delighted at their deliverance. “’Tis another miracle, mark my words,” said Edward Winslow. Against all the odds, the roasting hog was still stuck on long branches above the fire, and now, in a strange gesture of goodwill, Winslow hacked off one of the forepaws, and marched to the centre of the clearing with it. Kneeling down, he offered it to Massasoit and Harry, saying “Thankyou, Sirs, for our deliverance. For without your timely arrival, we were surely lost.

MISSION 2 - deliverance

when all had seemed lost harry and massasoit had help defeat croatoan and save the settlers from certain doom.

Mission 3 - a fair trade

“Thankyou kindly,” said Harry, and Winslow almost dropped the joint, so amazed was he to hear his own tongue coming from the mouth of the befeathered brave. Massasoit then called out in a strange language, and another native came scurrying out from a group that had gathered nearby. Gesturing to the not insignificant pile of provisions which remained at the edge of the clearing, Harry bowed to Massasoit, at whose command a large group of warriors came and began to pick up the sacks. “A fair price, I think, for your survival,” said Harry to Winslow, who nodded open mouthed.

“Stay back, Numberella, Ronnie.” Harry’s voice once again echoed in their heads. “Massasoit cannot see you here. He is still in his living form, unaware of the future. If he sees you now it will fracture the paradox and the events which brought us here may never happen.” Before long, the Massasoit’s tribe had gathered all that remained of the provisions, and began to make their way into the cover of the trees. Some of the pilgrims, by way of thanks for their deliverance, had given them cuts of the sizzling meat. Massasoit was sitting with Winslow, Standish and Brewster, smoking pipes and eating pork, the juices dripping down their happy faces. Above them, the sun was climbing towards its zenith, and Harry spoke to Massasoit, Standish, and Winslow. With a bow, Massasoit withdrew, and ran lightly to the edge of the forest.

“Make your way to the trees! Make your way to the trees,” cried Standish to the pilgrims. “Do not under any circumstances stay in the clearing.” “So this is goodbye,” said Numberella to Standish, who had walked over to them. “It has been an honour.” “The honour has been all mine,” said Standish, and he took Numberella’s hand and kissed it. She blushed.

Mission 4 - the timewarp awaits

“Eagle Eye,” he said. “I will never forget thy valour. Thou fought like ten men today, and I doubt we could have survived the initial onslaught of Croatoan’s tribe without you. I salute, you, Israelite of the Eagle Eye, Ronald of the Itchy Sea.” Ronnie bowed low. "I salute thee too, Sir Miles. Without thy valour we would never have succeeded.” “Good Sir,” said Harry approaching, with Winslow and Brewster. “There is one favour I must ask.” “Name it!” cried Standish. “I must ask it of all of you,” said Harry. “Can you speak for the pilgrims?” “We can,” said Edward Winslow, William Brewster, and Miles Standish.

“The events of the past few days can never be told. They must remain a secret. Although it is hard to explain why, your deliverance from starvation over the winter has only happened because of Numberella’s dream – or your prayer, if you prefer to see it like that. So you cannot speak of it, as if it is known, it will distort the continuum and hundreds of years from now, the message could be lost; and no mission would happen.” “We will keep the secret,” said Winslow. “If God willed ye to come, and God wills us to silence, it be a small price to pay.” “Very well,” said Harry. “It is time. Numberella, Ronnie, go to the middle of the clearing and lie in the grass, with your heads nearly touching, at an angle of about 120 degrees.

Put your arms out wide. Winslow, Standish, please withdraw your people. And remember – you must never speak of what you are about to see.” Harry walked slowly forward to the centre of the clearing, and lay down. His head was nearly touching Ronnie and Numberella’s heads, and he stretched his arms out. “Fingers touching,” he said, “And with any luck…” WHUMP. All around them, the cold ground softened suddenly, and the faintest hint of a breeze stole across them. In the distance, they could hear the noise of a thousand camp fires. “Bleeeedin’ eck,” said Harry. “That was a close run thing.”

“How on earth did you…” began Numberella. But at that moment, all words and thoughts were forgotten. The wind shrieked and howled, the great blackness descended, and none of them knew any more. Numberella will be back!
