¿Do you know what quidditch is?

It's origin

  • It started as a fictional sport invented by author J.K. Rowling for her fantasy book series Harry Potter.
  • It first appeared in the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997).
  • It is a dangerous but popular sport played by witches and wizards riding flying broomsticks.
  • The Quidditch position of Keeper might have been the inspiration in an Irish game by the name of Aingingein.
  • The sport of quidditch in its most widely-accepted form was begun at Middlebury College in Vermont in 2005. Students there decided to adapt the sport from the Harry Potter series and create a set of rules.

Rules

5. There is no set time limit to the game, but the Golden Snitch is usually caught within an hour.

1. It begins with the Quaffle and Bludgers all placed in the centre of the field.

2. Each team must have seven players start in their keeper zone, all with their eyes closed.

6. Any player that is hit by a Bludger is required to dismount their broom he would have to run back and touch their own nets before resuming play.

*Quidditch is a full contact game and players can use force against each other (by tackleing them ) in an attempt to capture the Quaffle or prevent other players from scoring a goal.

3. Once the Golden Snitch is at a sufficient distance away, then the referee will begin the game by shouting ‘brooms up!’

7. Throughout the game, the Seeker from each team’s sole duty is to capture the Golden Snitch and once this is done, the game ends.

4. Each team must attempt to score more goals by placing the Quaffle through one of the opposition nets and capturing the Golden Snitch which also immediately ends the game.

8. The winner of the match is the team with the most points at the end of the game.

What's the objective?

The object of the game of Quidditch is to score more points than your opponents. Players do this by scoring goals which is done by placing a slightly deflated volleyball called the Quaffle into the opposition's baskets giving them 10 points, and by capturing the Golden Snitch which is worth 30 points.

Anecdotes

When Blayde Loving heard the crack, he assumed it was just his broomstick.

“ As I reached for it with my left arm, the snitch tried pushing me to the ground to guard himself, and that’s when the snap was heard.”That snap, it was his collarbone, a fact that was abundantly clear to every person in attendance apart from Loving,
