Fridtjof Nansen!

Think: What skills did Fridtjof Nansen need to survive the tundra?

Fridtjof Nansen 1861-1930

Fridtjob Nansen was born in Norway in 1861. He was a famous skier, inventor, explorer, statesman and humanitarian. He is most famous for crossing the Greenland tundra in 1888- well before the invention of the car!

The Greenland expedition

Fridtjob Nansen led a team of explorers who skied and pulled sleds across the frozen tundra of Greenland. It took the team 49 days to complete their journey!

The temperatures were −45 °C! That makes Greenland one of the coldest places on Earth.

Planning the expedition

Fridtjob Nansen planned the journey with his team. They packed all of their equipment on a sled and pulled it across the tundra while they skied. Many people thought Nansen was crazy and that he would freeze to death. However, Nansen was confident and sure that his team could meet the challenge.
