What did we do?

Smart Teachers Play More: is a course focused for all type of teachers, fit for those types of subjects where you need to learn key concepts and using specific vocabulary. Some of the pillars that inspire that type of learning are: - Change your lesson in a pleasant experience through motivation (Promote curiosity and effort) - Introduce game to reinforce knowlege. - Repetition and understanding is essencial for memorization. - Promote oral expression, foreing languages and creativity.

Course Philosophy

Vocabulary + Storytelling+ Bingo

Choose a group of 10-12 words of vocabulary, tell to the students to choose 6 in sheet of paper using VT, later read the story and when they listen a word they need to stand up, repeat and mark in their bingo card. The winner will explain the words.

Storytelling activities

There were several. One of them I enjoyed most was based in telling an almost complete story explained with Visual Thinking (VT), and finally in groups we created an end. Useful for linguistics, ethical and G&H subjects but telling the right version of story later.

Knowing Circles

Four groups of students share a central circle with 4 different pieces of information that they need to put in order in teams.

Activities: just an eyeblink

We worked with traditional materials, we didn´t focus in technological applications and teachers show a lot of recycled material.

Challenges to do group of knowlege + Physical Activity

Work in groups, fullfill a task while you are listening music, when the music change you need to put in order your work to be ready for the next group, when the music change again continue with the next task.

Activities: just an eyeblink

• They spend their time in college or vocational School (FP) from 16 to 19. Last year Colleges work on a project in groups of 3-7 students, make a product or an idea and do a regional contest in a common area of that product or idea. Finally they show their projects.
• They have some compulsory and optional subjects.

• Secondary 12-16:
• Timetable is from 8:30 to 15:00. Lunch at school is paid by parents.
• 35 lessons a week and they combine lessons. Sports (2 lessons week), Swimming (1 l. a. w.), Art (1. l.a w.) Woodwork, Textile, Home economics (cooking, ironing…) - 1 l. a w.
• They have to choose 4-6 hours a week of Sports, Spanish, knitting sweaters, make up, finance, steel work, repairs cars..

Languages: Icelandic, English, Danish compulsory. In 3rd they also choose Spanish, German and French. Many subjects are taught together and in team teaching and they have an open timetable. National tests are in 4th , 7th and 9th grades .

Their marks are with 4 symbols from worst to best: X -O -Tick - Star. Anyway, all students who are 16 years old, obtain their certificate. No one repeats at the same level. If anyone does not achieve the competences the system focus in how to improve those competences. Teacher: 36 hour per week, 26 x 40 minutes per week. Salary (2600 month - 31.200 year). Also they are also paid extra hours. A hired flat of 90 m2 costs 1400 Eur-a month.

The building is designed to promote cooperation between teachers and students looking for a mix of practicality (every classroom has a telephone for direct communication with teachers, every heater is used as a seat, tables chairs and spaces can be easily modified, teachers has no tables but lecterns to be stand up, there are not departments but common areas for coworking for teachers) and cozy places (armchairs, cozy carpets, ping pong tables, football tables..).Under the skin of this type of building there is an educational system that tries to offer a confortable experience in classrooms. Notice that there are no fences that separate the school builiding from the neighborhood.

The course was healthy to open your mind, to think we can change some points of view, to think out of the box, to understand that we are very competent according our support and legislation changes. Some things are easy to change, other things don´t need to be changed but others are very difficult because it implies a deep cultural mentality change. And Iceland is a very curious place with beautiful landscapes and hard climate.
