Definition of urban tribes
It was in the 1980s when the first generation of urban tribes appeared with force in Europe and America: Although some of them already existed since 1950 and even before, it was not until the end of the 80s and especially during the 90s when they began to be called "urban tribes" and became increasingly popular: Punks, skinheads, rockers, rappers, heavies, almost all the youngsters had their favorite tribe.|
Brief history of urban tribes
According to several sources, the term urban tribe (or urban culture) appeared in 1988, and was invented by Michel Maffesoli, in his book "The time of the tribes" (Le temps des tribus). With the beginning of the 21st century, there were a few years when urban cultures began to enter into crisis.
In part it was the previous years were especially conflictive, and there were many problems of violence, fights between groups and drugs. Although these problems were not the fault of the urban tribes but of the social situation, there were those who associated the concept of urban tribe with that of youthful street violence, and people began to be prejudged only by their way of dressing.
Definition of urban tribes
Urban tribes are groups of people who have some close association based on lifestyles or similar activities. Generally, these groups share common interests different from the interests of the main culture. They are composed of groups of people with a common distinctive identity: the same aesthetic codes, the same identity symbols, the same rules, the same language, the same music and the same ideology. They reflect what they love or what they hate and their own instincts.
