WHO IS HE?

Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, South Korea

On the 31st January, 1963, one of South Korea's most prophilic serial killers, Lee Choonjae, was born. During his early childhood, Lee had a sibling who drowned, reportedly traumatising him. It is reported that while Lee Choongjae had a particularly good education up until highschool, he came from a poor socioeconomic background. It is also claimed that he was sexaully assaulted by an older sibling. His first prosecution was in 1989, when lee broke into a house with weapons. He was arrested and then released in 1990. In April of 1992, he married a bookkeeper who divorced him because he would abuse her and their son.

1st MURDER

JANUARY 13th, 1993 - Lee invited his sister-in-law around - He proceeded to drug, rape, and kill his sister-in-law who was only 18-years-old at the time. - When she was reported missing, Lee helped his father-in-law to look for her. A few days later, he was arrested on suspicion; September that year, he was convicted - Supreme court of South Korea charged him with a life sentence with possibility of parole after 20 years.

MARXISM - KARL MARX

It is reported that Lee Choonjae came from a poor socioeconomic background...

Karl Marx and Marxists would explain the reasoning behind Lee Choonjae's 16 murders and 9-30 rapes as being a proletariat (part of a working class family). - Choonjae may have acted out in frustration by being exploited in the capitalistic system - His crimes were non-utlitarian (non-finacially driven) However, it is reductionistic to assume that the reason he murdered and raped was because he was from a working class family.

Social Learning Theory - Bandura

Lee Choonjae was abused by family and sexually assaulted by a sibling

Social learning states that behaviour is easily copied from one model to another. From being abused by his own family, Lee may have imitated these actions. - When asked why he did it, Lee stated that he did it to relieve his sexual desire. - This matches with the 4th mediational process of motivation His wife reportedly divorced him because he was abusing her and their son.

- Lee was described as psychotic with a need of constant approval which he gained when in the army.

EYSENCK'S PERSONALITY THEORY

- Lee's father isnt mentioned, making it seem that he wasn't around, No father = inadequate socialisation
