AT CHRISTMAS VS. ON CHRISTMAS

Traditionally in British English, "at Christmas" means during the Christmas season. In Western Christianity, the Christmas season runs from December 25 (Christmas Day) to January 5; "on Christmas Day" means the 25th of December.

Examples:

  • At Christmas, we always eat dinner at my grandparents' house.
  • On Christmas day I love all the decorations at Christmas.

LET'S PRACTISE!

Other examples with "on" and "at": "on New Year's Day", or "On Easter Sunday" , "at Easter".

In American English, "on Christmas" is often used to refer to both the festival season and the 25th of December.

However, "on Christmas day" is considered correct in both British and American English, as well.

In American English we can also hear: "for Christmas"Examle: I'm going home for Christmas. (The Christmas season or on Dec. 25th))

The Christmas season is also called: Christmas time, Holiday season, The holidays, Festive season, Winter holidays, (northern hemisphere), Summer holidays (southern hemisphere), or New Year's holidays.
