Demonstration in the university of barcley
The Berkeley protest of the 1960’s was a series of protests that happened in the University of California, involving hundreds of students. It was the first national movement of young activism in history.
Many students were taking part in public protest, outside the campus, and ended up arrested. It was spread on national TV and it gave the university a bad reputation. To solve the situation, it was decided in 1964 that students were no longer allowed to have political activities or opinions on campus. Jack Weinberg, a student, was arrested for spreading political literature on campus. His arrest was the starting point of student activism. Many students were against this new restriction and explusons, but also against racial discrimination : they decided to fight back. Indeed, lead by their leader, a student names Mario Savio, around 500 students organized 10 hours sit-ins in Sproul Halls. These events made it to national TV and they won. This victory gave hope to students all over the country and it made them believe that they protests could make things change. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement was born.
In 1969, The Third World Liberation Front was formed and demands a special treatment for the communities that were historically excluded from college setting : people of color. It demands a curriculum designed for and taught by those minorities.
