The Lyrics

THE SINGER

Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. was born in Washington D.C., on April 2, 1939 and died in Los Angeles, on April 1, 1984. His stage name is Marvin Gaye, which was inspired by his artistic idol Sam Cooke. Marvin was an American soul, smooth soul, quiet storm, blaxploitation musician, producer and singer, and is nicknamed "the prince of soul", he was one of the fundamental singers of the Motown Sound.

THE SONG

"What's Going On" published in 1971, is his best known song, its genre is R&B and Soul. It should be noted that it moved the public so much that it received different musical awards. The lyrics of the song are inspired by the violence and police brutality in the United States in the 1960s to black people. One of the song's writers, singer-songwriter Renaldo, was moved to create this song when Benson was shocked to witness the large number of horrific assaults on people at the protest the Vietnam War. That incident became known as 'Bloody Thursday'.

THE SONG

The song tries to convey a message to the world about the horrible events that many black families go through. It wants to say that everything can be stopped with love and not through violence, he talks about how they need to be heard and respected. It is a reflection that reflects the discrimination of different races or ideologies, also on the abuse of power by the police, of the many victims and above all how people only know how to judge without having the right to do so.

THE LYRICS

In this part of the lyrics where it says… "Everybody thinks we're wrong. Oh, but who are they to judge us. Simply 'cause our hair is long. Oh, you know we've got to find a way. To bring some understanding here today"… Talks about how they were unfairly judged by the authorities, and that they needed to be heard and understood to stop the situation.

THE HISTORICAL EVENTS AND CAUSES

The historic context to which he refers takes place in the sixties, The Civil Rights Movement in the United States had to overcome numerous incidents of police brutality in its fight for justice and racial equality. All the demonstrations and wars that took place were in search of justice and equality with respect to races and the rights of all people, regardless of their nationality, skin color or origins.

CONSEQUENCES

The most important consequences of this frustrating historical event were the innumerable victims, both murders and those affected and injured. An important fact is that the Civil Rights Movement in the United States ended with the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, although this movement continues in many forms to this day. The fight for the rights of blacks and discrimination should continue to achieve the desired equality.

OPINION

In my opinion, this song is a work of art, something totally revolutionary and different. It conveys many emotions and introduces you to the situation that is so unfair and absurd due to the police abuse of the time. It makes you reflect, and gives a point of view on the importance of listening to the other and changing these facts with love, something very nice. Marvin Gaye is one of my favorite singers, most of his songs are an inspiration to me and really move me.
