Superlatives
A superlative is the form of an adjective or an adverb used to compare three or more things.
The superlative in English
can be
of majority
and
of minority.
We must do a distinctionbetween "short" adjectives/adverbs and "long" adjectives/adverbs
SHORT* ADJECTIVE/ADVERB THE+ adjective/adverb +
+ EST + OF/IN
*ONE SYLLABLE
OLD - THE OLDESTFAST - THE FASTEST
e.g. Ted is the oldest student in my school
aDJECTIVES ENDING IN -E ADD -ST
CUTE - THE CUTESTRARE - THE RAREST
e.g. My puppy is the cutest one IN the world
aDJECTIVES ENDING IN consonant + vowel + consonant double final consonant + -eST
BIG - THE BIGGESTTHIN - THE THINNEST
e.g. She is the fattest girl of the group
aDJECTIVES ENDING IN -y and adverb early change -y to -i + -eST
EASY - THE EASIESTEARLY - THE EARLIEST
e.g. Beth is the silliest girl in Italy
THE MOST ++ LONG* ADJECTIVES/ADVERBS + OF/IN
*2 OR MORE SYLLABLES
EXPENSIVE - THE MOST EXPENSIVEPEACEFULLY - THE MOST PEACEFULLY
e.g. Mum is the most beautiful woman in my family
TWO SYLLABLES ADJECTIVE ENDING IN -ER, -LE, -OW ADD -EST or USE THE MOST + ADJECTIVE
CLEVER - CLEVEREST /THE MOST CLEVERSIMPLE - SIMPLEST / THE MOST SIMPLE NARROW -NARROWEST /THE MOST NARROW
e.g. I'm cleverest/the most clever student in my class
IRREGULAR SUPERLATIVES
GOOD - THE BESTBAD - THE WORST FAR - THE FURTHEST /FARTHEST
It's better to remember the 3 irregular adjectives as if they were paradigms.
I'm taller than you
It's better to remember the 3 irregular adjectives as if they were paradigms.
i.e. GOOD - BETTER - THE BEST BAD - WORSE - THE WORST FAR - FURTHER/FARTHER - -THE FURTHEST/THEFARTHEST
Use IN/OF
instead of THAN! e.g.
I'm the tallest in my family.
