Socrates was a Greek philosopher, credited as one of the founders of Western Philosophy
Socrates (470 BCE - 399 BCE)
He was born on 470 BCE in Athens, Ancient Greece
Fought in the Peloponnesian War.
Socrates explore the thought that if we never question wisdom, then we can never see the flaws, thus our knowledge will not grow.
Socrates then started asking questions. He said that the best way to test the truth is to ask a series of challenging questions.
He said that if someone who cannot answer the challenges of his own claims, then how can they know the truth of their claim.
Socrates took Plato as his student. Plato who then became Aristotle's mentor.
Aristotle then tutored Alexander the Great. Alexander spread the Greek thought to his vast kingdom. When the Romans took over Alexander's empire, they spread the Greek tradition further.
Socrates was then persecuted and ordered to be executed by powerful men in Athens for "corrupting the youth."
What I learned
I learned that the first step on enlightening yourself to the truth is by knowing whether or not you know anything. Socrates also taught us that we should have a thought process when confronting both the unknown and the known. Socrates also has a scientific method named after him which is the Socratic Method. That method is the basis of modern scientific and philosophical inquiry. Thanks to him, science flourished when people have realized that having this process proved to be crucial and beneficial for methodical questioning and testing of claims.
