Principles of materials designing.

Materials Design Rolsana Castro Lidueñas 09/2022

a. In your opinion what are the most important principles in materials development, you need to explain their importance in your own words. “Principle 8: The opportunity to interact in the L2 is central to developing L2 proficiency”. (Ellis, 2005). Regarding this principle, I consider that any language we want to learn needs us to develop 4 skills, one of which is speaking. This skill is only achieved by interacting with others, it is a fundamental aspect of learning an L2 since it is necessary to be able to communicate with others.

On another hand, “Learners should have repeated and spaced opportunities in a variety of contexts” Nation's (1993) in my opinion, learning should not only be reduced to the classroom, the student must create an environment in his daily life that allows him to always be in contact with his L2, whether it is watching movies, listening to music, talking with friends, etc. The idea is that the teacher helps the student to create and find those contexts outside the classroom that allows the student to have the opportunity to learn.

b. What are authentic materials? Name at least 5 examples of authentic materials. Authentic materials, that is, materials which have not been designed for teaching purposes, are potential learning tools due to the authenticity of the language and their intimate relation with the communicative language teaching approach (Hall, 1995; Tomlinson, 1998). Here are some examples: songs, websites, documentaries, podcasts, and TV shows.

c. What are non-authentic materials? Name at least 5 examples of nonauthentic materials. Non-authentic materials are planned, designed, and produced based on the curriculum. Here are some examples: flashcards, textbooks, worksheets, crosswords, and role-play cards.

d. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using non-authentic materials in the class? Advantages: Language is easy, has clear objectives, and materials are adaptable to the teaching method. Disadvantages: The materials may lack cultural information, the students may get bored with the materials and also the teacher may be inactive when using materials like videos that have a long duration.

e. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials in the class? Advantages:They provide authentic cultural information, it is a more creative approach to teaching, and it has a positive effect on learner motivation. Disadvantages: lack of material development skills of the teacher, it has a complex vocabulary and mixed grammar structures.
