A little context

The perfect tense is also known as the PAST TENSE. It is used when talking about things you did in the past.

did you know?

in german...
  • I wrote
  • I have written
  • I did write

are all said in the same way!!

Word Order

word order !

To form a successful sentence using the perfect tense, you will need a subject, object, the correct auxiliary verb (either haben or sein), and a past participle

OBJECT

SUBJECT

Er hat das Buch gelesen

PAST PARTICPILE

AUXILIARY VERB

MUST ALWAYS COME AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE

must always be the SECOND IDEA

auxiliary verbs

auxiliary verbs !

Auxiliary verbs are 'helping words', and they must always be the second idea in a sentence
haben or sein ?

Sein is used when the action is descibing movement from A to B or a change in state. It can also be used for being born and death.

Other than these , haben is used as an auxiliary verb

conjugations

sein

haben

+ ich bin + du bist + er/ sie/ es ist + wir sind + ihr seid + Sie/ sie sind
+ ich habe + du habst + er/ sie/ es hat + wir haben + ihr habt +Sie/ sie haben

Forming the past participle !

1) take your infinitive and remove 'en'

machen -> mach

2) add 'ge' to the beginning of the infinitive's stem

mach -> gemach

3) add 't' to the end of the infinitive's stem

gemach -> gemacht

irregulars

irregulars !

Often, instead of having 'ge...t' around a stem, irregular have 'ge...en'
infinitives that end in 'ieren' will not change
infinitives that begin with be-, ge-, emp-, ent- & ver- remain the same and do NOT add ge-

seperable verbs

what about seperable verbs?

when forming a past participle with a separable verb, we can't just put 'ge' in front

why?

-> because it doesn't sound right :]
instead, we 'sandwich' the 'ge' in between the two parts of the separable verb
fernsehen -> ferngesehen redfahren -> radgefahren
