Pythagoras' theorem

by Buştiuc Arina, Gaudeamsus High-School, Republic of Moldova

Pythagora's

Pythagoras was born in Samos and likely went to Egypt and Babylon as a young man. He emigrated to southern Italy about 532 bce, apparently to escape Samos's tyrannical rule, and established his ethico-political academy at Croton.

What was Pythagora's known for?

Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher who made important developments in mathematics, astronomy, and the theory of music. The theorem now known as Pythagoras's theorem was known to the Babylonians 1000 years earlier but he may have been the first to prove it.

Pythagoras' theorem

Pythagorean theorem, the well-known geometric theorem that the sum of the squares on the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square on the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle).

Why is Pythagoras' Theorem important?

The discovery of Pythagoras' theorem led the Greeks to prove the existence of numbers that could not be expressed as rational numbers. For example, taking the two shorter sides of a right triangle to be 1 and 1, we are led to a hypotenuse of length , which is not a rational number.

History of Pythagoras' Theorem

  • Pythagoras theorem was introduced by the Greek Mathematician Pythagoras of Samos. He was an ancient Ionian Greek philosopher. He formed a group of mathematicians who works religiously on numbers and lived like monks.
  • Although Pythagoras introduced and popularised the theorem, there is sufficient evidence proving its existence in other civilizations, 1000 years before Pythagoras was born. The oldest known evidence dates back to between 20th to 16th Century B.C in the Old Babylonian Period.
