What would a sustainable world look like?

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just environmentalism. Embedded in most definitions of sustainability we also find concerns for social equity and economic development.

There are three pillars of sustainability:

While the concept of sustainability is a relatively new idea, the movement as a whole has its roots in social justice, conservationism, internationalism and other historically rich past movements. In the late twentieth century, many of these ideas were brought together in the call for "sustainable development," economically, environmentally, and socially.

Qu'est-ce que la durabilité ?

À quoi ressemblerait un monde durable ?

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just environmentalism. Embedded in most definitions of sustainability we also find concerns for social equity and economic development.

Use the colouring tool to match the terms to their definition!

Test Yourself! Can you match the following key words and terms with their definition?

Resources that cannot be replaced once they have been used up, e.g. coal, oil, and natural gas.

The progress made by creating wealth through businesses, industry, and trade.

Sustainable
Economic Development

Minimizing damage to the environment and avoiding using natural resources, e.g. by using renewable resources

Carbon Footprint

Electricity generated by a renewable method with a relatively low impact on the environment, e.g. wave, wind and solar power.

Fossil Fuels

A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.

Green Electricity

Solution!

The amount of energy generated from the activities of people.

Non-Renewable Resources

Use the colouring tool to match the terms to their definition!

Testez vos connaissances !

Solution!

The amount of energy generated from the activities of people.

Ressources non renouvelables
