Places Of Pilgrimage

Each year, Christians around the world go on pilgrimages to various places for various reasons. Maybe the want to travel to Jesus's birthplace. Whatever the reason, pilgrimage is important to Christians, and today I will tell you common places of pilgrimage, and why they go there.

Rome - The Vatican

Rome is an important place to go on a pilgrimage because it helps Christians get closer to the center of their faith and to The Pope. The Pope lives in The Vatican and speaks publicly on Wednesdays in Saint Peters Square, something which many Christians will listen to. While on a pilgrimage here, you can tour The Vatican or attend the mass led by the Pope. It costs 53 to 68 euros to tour the entire Vatican, but you can get cheapers tickets to tour parts of it.

History

People started to travel to there in the 4th century but it was abandoned in 1309 due to the move of The Papal Court to France. It returned in 1377 and famous landmarks (like The Sistene Chapel, The Apostolie Palace and Saint Peters Basilica. Vatican city established itself as a sovergeign nation in 1929 with the signing of the Lateran Pact

Israel- Jerusalem

Christians take pilgimages to Jerusalem in the belief that it will bring them closer to Jesus's experience approaching death, which will help develop there spirituality and become closer to God. Jerusalem is also known as 'The Holy Land'. Places that Christians might visit while being there include: The Garden of Gethsemane (Where Jesus prayed before being arrested by the Romans), The Church of The Hold Sepulchure (said to have been built on the site of Jesus's crucifixion), The Via Dolorosa (special route that is said to have been the path Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion) and The Church of Ascension (said to be the site where Jesus rose into heaven 40 days after his resurrection). It costs around £1,000- £3,000 pound to fly there.

History

Jesus was crucified here around 30 A.D and in 632 A.D, Muhammad was said to have died and ascended to heaven from here. Pilgrimages in Jerusalem started in the 1st century A.D. The Ottoman Empire ruled Jerusalem from 1516- 1917, and after World War 1, Great Britain took over Jerusalem until 1948, when Isreal became an independent state.
