Choosing how and where to
publish your PhD thesis
publishing is a legal obligation
(Order of 25 May 2016 updated with the Decree of 26 August 2022)
In French law, a PhD thesis does not confer only copyright as it is also a legally-binding document for issuing the PhD degree
All the theses defended in France must be recorded in French Higher Education catalogue Sudoc as well as in the platform theses.fr
PUBLISHING & confidentiality
Article 25 defines the legal framework of confidential theses
The confidentiality must be requested and granted by the university BEFORE the defence. Requests introduced AFTER will be discarded
In short...
Confidentiality is necessarily limited in time
Your PhD thesis shall be published once the confidentiality period expires
Publishing options
You have to choose between two publishing options even if your PhD thesis is temporarily confidential
Restricted dissemination
Full dissemination
OR
i.e Intranet publishing
i.e online publishing
Intranet publishing
Access to full text will be granted after authentication: only students, teachers and researchers from French universities will get access to it
It is the minimum requirement
Even placed under restricted access, a PhD thesis can still be shared on demand with any person affiliated to a French University
(article L111-5 of Code of Education)
internet publishing
It is the open access option
At Lyon 1 University, PhD theses are published in French open archive HAL (collection theses) and its European counterpart DART Europe
Boosts visibility, citation rate, and reduces the risk of plagiarism
It will also be accessible through catalogue Sudoc and search engine theses.fr
internet publishing with embargo
You can choose to postpone online publishing by setting an embargo:
- on your own initiative when you deposit your PhD thesis
- up to 2 years, even if this period can then be extended if so need be
- however put under embargo, full text is still accessible on the national Intranet
Pending articles in your thesis = embargo (mandatory)
publishing an expurgated version
One of libraries' missions consists in archiving a complete version of your PhD thesis (even for confidential theses)
Yet you can create an expurgated version which can be published online without any delay (with full text on the Intranet)
To remove items (images, data, figures, etc.)
- which are sensitive
- or for which you do not possess the rights for reuse
to sum up
1. Archiving and publishing are mandatory!
2. Two paths for publishing: Internet or Intranet
3. You can postpone an Internet publication by setting an embargo (up to 2 years, extendable)
4. You can publish an expurgated version online
5. Confidentiality prevents publication for a limited period of time but is strictly regulated
And that's it!
