Teaching philosophy

I believe students learn best when they are intrinsically motivated. I therefore focus on creating lessons that are engaging, relevant to my students’ real lives, and encourage active discovery. As Krashen mentioned on his affective filter hypothesis, anxiety, motivation and self-confidence impact the second language acquisition process. That is the reason why I create lessons that are fun and motivate the students, integrating hands-on activities with authentic learning experiences and diverse materials. I make sure to always take into consideration the individual needs and interests of my students, with a learner-centred approach through which they can enjoy learning but are also aware of my high expectations for them to work hard. It is my desire to integrate culture and language in every session given the fact that I believe we cannot understand one without the other. I create a safe environment for my students to discover other cultures and feel secure to be able to share their thoughts. The key word in my classroom is RESPECT and that entails listening atentively to everyone's opinions as well as reflecting on and celebrating other cultures. I strive for my classroon to be an open space to the diverse and vibrant world we live in.
I consider effective on-going family involvement to be integral to student success. Therefore, I communicate regularly with my student's parents to develop a healthy relationship between home and school. This, will foster the attainment of the student's full potential. I make sure to not only contact the families for negative reasons but to also check in for positive reinforcement about the student's development at school. When it comes to assessment I ensure to carry out formative assessment every day in class. I assess my students on clear objectives that are displayed on the board daily but I also consider self-assessment (for students and teacher) to be essential to become aware of the different aspects we can improve on. Peer assessment also takes part in my classroom due to the fact that it encourages students to reflect on their own work as well. I check for understanding with different methods like Show Me or Exit Tickets in most of my lessons. Finally, I ask my students to also evaluate me using different rubrics.
