Lesson 1
Creatures of our imaginations
Imagine you have discovered a new creature
It has never been seen before, and is nothing like any creature that already exists!
What does your creature look like?
Watch the video on the next slide and take notes of what may be relevant to your creature
Watch the fictional animals video
Create your creature
You now have time to design and draw your creature. Think about colours and interesting features your creature may have. Try and make your creatures the most detailed they can be!
Word Bank
Create a word bank for your creature. Think about the three following categories: adjectives, verbs, adverbs. You also need to start thinking of a name for your creature.

verbs
Creature Name

Lesson 2
Home Farm's Field Guide to the weird and wonderful creatures of Bradford
Field guide: a book for the identification of animals, birds, flowers, or other things in their natural environment.
Let's look at examples of field guides and what would be in them.
Look at each example of an extract from a field guide. Think about the following things -
- What do they have in common?
- What features are included that wouldn't be in another text type? story, poem etc.
- Which do you prefer? Why?
Features
A field guide is an example of a non-chronological report. Can you identify the features in this list on the example field guide in front of you?
Lesson 3
Plan
Using the planning sheet, fill in all information about your creature. Think about what information from your pre plan sheet you would like to have a section about.
Lesson 4
Writing - first draft
Using all the information you have (picture, pre-plan, planning sheet, word bank) you now need to write your first draft. This needs to be independent, you may use any resources that will be helpful to you. When you have finished, read it through and check back for all your basic writing features; punctuation, spellings, paragraphs, adjectives, adverbs etc.
Does your writing sing?
Lesson 5
Peer Review
Read through your teacher chosen partner's report. Your task is to draw their creature, based on the description they have given.
Picture Comparison
Compare your own picture with the picture your partner has drawn. Do they match? If not, what extra detail do you need to add? Use this time to add or change information in your writing.
Lesson 6
Editing Stations & Draft 2
Using the editing stations around the room, select any resources that will be helpful to you. Use this time to cover your work in green pen. If you finish, and you feel like you have everything in there (check the checklist!), then you can start to rewrite your next draft on a new piece of paper. Don't forget to add all your green pen in!
