DATA VISUALIZATION BASICS
-----------------
TELL A STORY!
[1][2]
- Humans are mainly visual learners and emotional beings.
- Data viz is about transmiting both emotions and information by creating a visual story of the data.
- The best design is the one you don't see: "less is more".
- Data viz should shorten the path between the message and the audience.
MAIN IDEAS
COUNTING & NUMEROSITY
PATTERNS & ORGANIZATION
COLOR USE
KEY COGNITIVE ELEMENTS
Is the decoding of visual information by our brains. Is how we group and discriminate information [1].
Is the immediate and almost instintive count of objects or clusters [1],
Color is subjective, it can be interpreted differently according to the audience. Use basic color wheel for reference [1].
Recommendation: check Gestalt laws of design [1].
Recommendation: do not exceed 10 objects [1].
Recommendation: use 2 or 3 different colors [1].
- Always apply hierarchy.
- Typography <> Typeface <> Font
- Use serif for traditional, sans serif for modern. [1]
- Limit types to 1 or 2.
- Not an exact science also.
- Use serif for big text, sans serif for small labels. [1]
TYPOGRAPHY
- Is one type of pattern (2D or 3D)
- Use color contrast among shapes.
- Should be driven by the goals of the visual. [1]
BUILDING BLOCKS
SHAPES
- Most basic element.
- Tools to reinforce patterns.
- Help identify creation of objects, borders and shapes. [1]
- Best way to represent texture [1].
