Myelopathy
Causes
Definiton
Myelopathy could be acquired in a multitude of ways:
- Autoimmune disorders
- Tumours, cysts and hematomas
- Spinal injury or infection
- Inflammatory disease
- Radiation therapy
- Neurological disorders
Myelopathy is spinal cord damage caused by extreme compression, which can occur as a result of trauma, congenital stenosis, degenerative disease, or disc herniation.
Myelopathy occurs due to compression, when there is bone on bone compression it causes more bone growth due to Wolff's law, this causes osteophytes or bone spores to form.
The gel-like structure which sits at the centre of the inervertebral disc, is called the nucleus pulposus and is surrounded by the annulus fibrosis. Compression causes the pulposus to herinate.
Due to this, nerve root pinching may occur. This causes the pain, tingling and numbness symptoms experienced by patients. There gait may also be affected.
Surgery and Treatment
Spine decompression surgery is ususally perfomed to relive pressure on the spine, an anterior cervical discetomy fusion may be used to take out an unhealthy disc. Cervical laminectomy is also a viable surgical option for the treatment of cervical myelopathy.
