What is Greek Mythology?

Greek mythology is a collection of ancient Greek stories about gods, heroes, and rituals. The more sceptical Greeks, such as the philosopher Plato in the 5th–4th century BCE, recognised that the myths contained a significant amount of fiction. The myths, on the other hand, were generally regarded as true accounts in Greek popular piety. Greek mythology has had a significant impact on Western human civilisation arts and literature, as much of Greek culture has been passed down through the generations.

POP CULTURE AND THE ARTS

Greek mythology has been used in nearly every form of popular culture. Many Greek myths have been adapted into modern novels, movies, TV shows and video games. The word “theatre” is derived from the Greek word “theatron”, meaning the seating section of outdoor arenas where people watched plays. The first western theatre originated in Athens, and was, like many other Ancient Greek theatres, a semicircular structure cut into a hillside that was capable of seating 10,000 to 20,000 people. Some well-known instances of Greek mythology in pop culture are:

  • Disney’s Hercules cartoon movie
  • The best-selling novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Ancient Theatre of Philippi in Northern Eastern Greece.

Greek heroes

VS

Many heroes in ancient Greece were to be war heroes such as Achilles, Hercules, Odysseus and etc. And many of these heroes are very selfish and short tempered. or example in the Iliad, Achilles wouldn’t fight and defend his people over a girl. This caused many casualties for his comrades. This was very childish and unlike a hero who should stand for the greater good. Many ancient Greek heroes were in it for the glory and fame, and were far from humble.

Modern superheroes

Modern Heroes, such as heroes in movies or animations, are more humble than Greek heroes. They make an effort to cover up their face with a mask so that they cant be identified, therefore they’re not in it for the glory or fame. examples of this would be Batman, Spider-man and etc. Even when they are egotistical, they have a good ulterior motive behind their actions and they do everything to protect the people. an example of this would be Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. A Greek hero within modern times would be seen as too violent, war hungry and a sociopath to some extent.

How Greek Mythology continues to have a large influence on our modern lives.

Despite the fact that the Ancient Greeks lived over 2000 years ago, Greek mythology continues to impact how we live now in western society. References to Greek Mythology can still be found in our discussions about science, arts and literature, language, names and brands. Philoserphers from Ancient Greece also laid the foundations for many areas of study including astrology, mathematics, biology, engineering, medicine or linguistics. Everywhere you turn, there is likely to be a reference to Greek Mythology. In the brand of the sports shoes you are wearing, the name given to your breakfast meal, the way a building has been constructed, the music you are listening to or the poem you are studying at school.

Although people of all countries, eras, and stages of civilization have developed myths that explain the existence and workings of natural phenomena, recount the deeds of gods or heroes, or seek to justify social or political institutions, the myths of the Greeks have remained unrivaled in the Western world as sources of imaginative and appealing ideas. Poets and artists from ancient times to the present have derived inspiration from Greek mythology and have discovered contemporary significance and relevance in Classical mythological themes.
