Distinction must be made between direct speech and reported speech Direct speech / She says: "I like English." Reported speech / She says (that) she likes English. Direct speech / He told me : "I love you." Reported speech / He told me he loved me. Do not change the tense if the introductory clause is in a present tense (e. g. He says).
