Following the pandemic year of 2020, we thought 2021 would be a much different year than it turned out. Many of our plans for 2021 were delayed or redirected. The incredible generosity and can-do spirit of our community made things better when things were at their worst. And HCCF managed to have an outstanding year serving our community!
We were pleased in 2021 to share our 25th Anniversary serving all of Hendricks County. We made significant celebration grants and capped off our anniversary year with new videos celebrating our impact in every corner of Hendricks County. See our anniversary story on pages 10-13 and be sure to have a look at our videos. Once again, Hendricks County proved itself a vibrant, giving community. Total revenue of over $2.2 million allowed us to make grants of over $2 million, a record grantmaking total for our 25th year! Our investment pool saw returns of 10% as our assets reached a new high of over $21.7 million.
Our Board of Directors began a strategic planning process in July, leading to the approval in December of new Mission, Vision and Values Statements (see opposite page). We’re excited to share the bedrock of these new statements which acknowledge that much has changed in our community and the larger world – and for HCCF. We are thankful for the continued support of our long-time
donors, our many volunteers, our new friends and our
dedicated professional staff. Your Board is committed to

anya Shelburne raised her family in Brownsburg and has a deep appreciation for her community. That appreciation has compelled her to give back to Hendricks County, in time, talent and treasure. For many years, she has volunteered at various nonprofits, including Brooke’s Place and Relay For Life. But she credits the Community Foundation for the knowledge and training she needed to become an effective community leader and volunteer.
Tanya participated in many of HCCF’s Nonprofit Learning Sessions, including
the Certificate in Fund Raising Management program from the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s The Fund Raising School. The education she received through these sessions, in addition to the connections she made during the nonprofit networking sessions, helped her grow as a nonprofit leader and determine where her skills and time could best be used.
At HCCF’s Giving Tuesday event in 2019, Tanya decided that she wanted to support the Community Foundation every month, not just once a year. Tanya said “I know that I can never be a large donor, but I want to give back to this organization because it has done so much for me. And I have felt very appreciated as a donor, regardless of the amount of my gift.”

aryn Millikan, Director of the Danville-Center Township Public Library, was excited to receive a Community Impact Grant of $2,125 for technology upgrades in the library. Serving the library’s patrons during COVID was very challenging.
Karyn and her staff realized they needed upgraded equipment –portable screens and audio/visual equipment – so that they could offer programming outside. This equipment would also enable the library to take their services off-site and expand their reach into the community.
Karyn said, “HCCF was very helpful to us throughout the whole grant process. We appreciate this funding because it will really help us accomplish our mission – ‘to build community and enrich lives by promoting lifelong learning.’ We are so fortunate to have an organization like HCCF in our county.”
In 2021, HCCF awarded over $187,000 in Community Enhancement Grants to support organizations all across Hendricks County.
Our Community Enhancement Funds are flexible funds that allow HCCF to respond to the greatest needs and opportunities in our community. The grants come from our unrestricted, Community Enhancement Funds, including the Deedee Daniel Opportunity Fund, the First Merchants Charitable Fund, the Directors Unrestricted Fund, and our 63 Family Legacy Funds. HCCF’s 2021 Community Enhancement grants included Community Impact grants, 25th Anniversary grants, and Community Unity grants.

ince 1998, the Hendricks County Community Foundation has been proud to partner with Lilly Endowment Inc. to offer the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. Over the last 24 years, HCCF has awarded 68 Lilly Scholarships to students from Hendricks County. This scholarship provides full tuition to an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana and a yearly stipend for required books and equipment. Hendricks County Lilly Scholars are awarded this prestigious scholarship based on significant community service, outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills.

he Hendricks County Community Foundation turned 25 in 2021! The Community Foundation started with a few thousand dollars, a handful of volunteers, and a shared passion to make the community better. That vision has come to life and flourished thanks to thousands of people all over Hendricks County who have found creative and impactful ways to give—from small $25 annual support checks all the way to lifetime gifts and bequests.
In 1996, the Foundation had an endowment of just under $140,000. Today, HCCF’s endowment is over $21 million! Hon. Jim Spencer, the first president of
the Community Foundation in 1996 and one of its founding members in 1993, commented on his amazement at the progress and growth of HCCF over the past 25 years: “From a very small start, the Community Foundation has grown to assets of over $21 million providing grants in 2021 of $2 million to programs supporting Hendricks County and scholarships to many local students. The hard work and dedication of the staff and board members who have served the Community Foundation during the past 25 years have certainly surpassed any expectations that were established in 1993. It has been my privilege and honor to serve as a small part in the good this foundation has provided to Hendricks County.”

HCCF expanded its role in the community in 2019 when it accepted the challenge given by Lilly Endowment and the GIFT VII Community Leadership Initiative to be a thought leader and a convener to address issues important to the communities it serves. HCCF has worked to bring our community together to determine our greatest needs and creative ways to solve them. In 2020, the Community Foundation pivoted its efforts to address the pandemic crisis and provided over $535,000 in COVID response grants. In honor of our 25th anniversary, HCCF awarded $25,000 in grants to organizations all across Hendricks County, 13 of which represent grant recipients receiving inaugural grants in 1996. For any organization no longer operating, a similar nonprofit currently serving Hendricks
Conversations on Community Unity
County was chosen. Two additional grants were made in honor of HCCF’s first Board President, Hon. Jim Spencer and the first Executive Director, Deedee Daniel. Finally, a grant was made to the Hendricks County Tricentennial Fund to commemorate the occasion and invest in the future of the county.

As we reflect on the last 25 years, we are grateful for many things. We are grateful for 25 years of visionary leadership by dozens of dedicated board members from every corner of the county. Celebrating 25 Years of Doing Good

Our county has grown exponentially in the past 25 years, and HCCF has grown right along with it. Since 2000, the Community Foundation has given over $12 million in grants to Hendricks County, meeting the needs where and when they arise.

HCCF expanded its role in the community in 2019 when it accepted the challenge given by Lilly Endowment and the GIFT VII Community Leadership Initiative to be a thought leader and a convener to address issues important to the communities it serves. HCCF has worked to bring our community together to determine our greatest needs and creative ways to solve them. In 2020, the Community Foundation pivoted its efforts to address the pandemic crisis and provided over $535,000 in COVID response grants. In honor of our 25th anniversary, HCCF awarded $25,000 in grants to organizations all across Hendricks County, 13 of which represent grant recipients receiving inaugural grants in 1996. For any organization no longer operating, a similar nonprofit currently serving Hendricks
Conversations on Community Unity
County was chosen. Two additional grants were made in honor of HCCF’s first Board President, Hon. Jim Spencer and the first Executive Director, Deedee Daniel. Finally, a grant was made to the Hendricks County Tricentennial Fund to commemorate the occasion and invest in the future of the county.

As we reflect on the last 25 years, we are grateful for many things. We are grateful for 25 years of visionary leadership by dozens of dedicated board members from every corner of the county. We are grateful for 25 years of faithful service from staff and hundreds of volunteers who have labored countless hours to make HCCF a healthy, sustainable organization with a bright future ahead.
