What my Project is about

  • Why there is a significant difference in mortality rate between pregant women of colour and white women

My Findings

“I was treated like a vessel, not like a human. The experience left me feeling humiliated, disempowered and ashamed.”

"We hear the statistics about those who have died in the worst cases but we dont hear from all the people suffering poorer outcome because of their race who are still living with trauma"

(‘I felt humiliated’: parents respond to NHS maternity care racial bias inquiry, 2022)

(‘I felt humiliated’: parents respond to NHS maternity care racial bias inquiry, 2022)

“On a global measure combining exposure to stressors in five domains (occupation, finances, relationships, racial bias, and violence), blacks, Hispanics, and Asians reported higher levels of stress than whites.”

"Women in the network feel they have been judged by the colour of their skin when accessing healthcare services [...] they believe they have received a second-class service."

(Bulatao, Anderson and National Research Council (US) Panel on Race, 2022)

(Being seen, being heard: Improving maternity care for black women, 2022)

  • Objectivity
  • Linking back to studies

My Conclusions

According to my findings i concluded although there are many reasons to suggest mortality rates is not due to racism the evidence for it being racism was overwhelming and racism is a significant cause for mortality rate differences between women of colour and white women
