Context: Second World war began on September 1st, 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. UK had assured Poland that if this happened, the country would go to war. On September 3rd, 1939, the same day as France, UK declared war on Nazi Germany. This was the beginning of the 'Battle of the Atlantic' (Winston Churchill)

A. Battle of Dunkirk
Context: In May 1940, the British and French troops were cornered in Dunkirk by the German advance and tried to push back the assaults. Churchill decided to repatriate british troops.

Context: In July 1940, in order to have the surrender of England, Germany had to take control of the skies over the English Channel. This was the beginning of the Battle of Britain (July 10th, 1940 – October 31st 1940) between the Luftwaffe (German aviation) and the Royal Air Force (British Air Force).
Context: Realisaing that he couldn't win the Battle of Britain, Hitler decided to change his strategy:This is the beginning of the Blitz (September 7th 1940 – May 21st 1941)

Context: Shortly after the German attack on Russia in June 1941, Churchill offered Britain’s support to Stalin. He also reinforced British links with the US.
