part 1

1. What is all about

2. What to do

3. What not to do

4. Useful grammar to score high marks

5. Golden Rules

What is all about?

-basic questions -familiar topics e.g.: family, friends, holiday, habits, sports, plans

- name and marksheets- where are you from? -part 1 QUESTION/S- it depends on your production

DO

-keep your 'where are you from' question short-be natural, but you can lie: no one cares -produce enough language to be assessed -stay on topic (relate to the question) -use linkers

more than present simple

present perfect

I've always loved sports

used to+ infinitive

when I was young I used to practice many sports, but now I prefer playing videogames

inversion

with negative adverbs of frequency

if only/ I wish + simple past

If only I had more time, i would go to the gym more often

DON'T

-use lists: show you know linking expressions-use rude language: if it happens, show you realized it and apologize! -use present simple only: your grammar is more flexible than that.

golden rules

1. stay on topic

4. avoid the present simple

2. extend your answer

5. stay formal with the examiner

3. avoid using lists

get it?!

part 2

1. What is all about

2. What to do

3. What not to do

4. Useful grammar to score high marks

5. Golden Rules

What is all about?

-talk on your own (active part)-listen and comment (second part)

comparing, describing, expressing opinions, speculating.

1.The examiner gives you two photos and asks you to talk about them. (Question written at the top of the page as a reminder.2.You have to speak for 1 minute without interruption

DO

1min part -focus on the question-use modal verbs-speculate (think about who, what, why, etc) - use modals to speculate about the present and then use them to speculate about the past to answer the question (when possible) 2nd part - use the 2nd conditional

DON'T

1min part-describe, not only (THAT IS B1!)-use the present continuous only -ignore the tense of the question 30 sec part - give one-word answers (30. sec part) -use the present simple...cause it's simple

GRAMMAR TIPS

MODAL VERBS_speculation (present)

+BE+GERUND

it depends+ 0 conditional

If+ sub+pres. simple sub+pres. simple

past modal of deduction

+HAVE+PAST PARTCIPLE

USED TO

NB: I didn't use to (negative)

golden rules

4. 2nd conditional for preferences

1. answer the question

2. speculate about the present

5.it depends +zero conditional (like/dislikes)

3. used to (likes/dislikes)

3. speculate about the past

get it?!

part 3

1. What is all about

2. What to do

3. What not to do

4. Useful phrases

5. Golden Rules

What is all about?

-interact (2-3 minutes)-make a decision (1 min)

Exchanging ideas, expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing, suggesting, speculating, evaluating, reaching a decision through negotiation, etc.

Conversation with the other candidate. -The examiner gives you some material and a task to do. - You have a few seconds to read the 5 prompts -You have to talk with the other candidate -Make a decision

DON'T

-be too personal-be /look bored: your pronunciation will suffer - say 'I agree/ disagree' - forget body language

DO

- turn toward your partner- eye contact - ask 'should I go first or would you like to?' -keep it general: you can add some personal experience, but here it's not about you... -listen actively (nod or shake head for instance) -interact -link what you say to what your partner has just said -rephrase your partner's words -negotiate the answer -expand your partner answer if he/she is in trouble

What is all about?

Expressing opinion, justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing.

This is a further discussion with the other candidate, guided by questions from the examiner (no more than 6/ ideal is 2), about the topics or issues raised in the task in Part 3.

DO

-turn your chairs inwards -give reasons for your answers -listen actively - take turns, but answer as a team (the examiner might not mention names here, they do it to help the less talkative) -acknowledge what your partner says -rephrase and comment- give your thoughts-conversate - if the topic is interesting ask questions to show interest -rephrase and comment - give your thoughts -enjoy your conversation

DON'T

- use 'agree/disagree'...if you can- be irrelevant -get distracted -rehearse -say: I don't know'. Say, 'Oh, what a question! I never thought about it before, but maybe...' instead -ask how well you did at the end. They aren't allowed to tell you anyway. -start laughing or speaking your own language, not until you have left the room

USEful PHRASES

buying time

giving YOUR OPINION

giving reasons for your opinion

adding reasons

asking your speaking partner

INTERRUPTING POLITELY

TRYING TO CHANGE AN OPINION

golden rules part 4

1. The questions in part 4 are not written down, so you have to listen carefully. If you don't understand the question, ask the examiner to repeat it. 2. Look at the examiner when you give your answer, but then look at your partner when you are talking to each other. 3. Always explain your answers. ' If you don't explain your answers, the examiner will always ask 'why?' It's much better if you say why on your own. 4'I don't know' is a BAD Answer. 5. Be interested in what your partner says and ask for reasons, if necessary. There are no right or wrong answers, only good or bad conversations. 6. Use some interesting vocabulary, and try to use a variety of words. 7. When the exam is over, say goodbye but don't ask how well you did, and no italian. it's not a job interview but there's no reason to make a bad impression.

HOW TO BE PERFORM SUCCESSFULLY

BREATH: respira. SHOW OFF: Non ti limitare a tempi verbali semplici, non usare parole come “good” o “bad”, cerca piuttosto di usare verbi modali, ipotetiche, parole ricercate come “astonishing” e “awful”.

HOW TO BE INTERACT SUCCESSFULLY

PART 3 AND 4 are focused on interaction BE NATURAL:.
