and why it is important
Open Science
Open Science describes an on-going movement in the way research is performed, researchers collaborate, knowledge is shared, and science is organized. It affects the whole research cycle and its stakeholders, enhances science by facilitating more transparency, openness, networking and collaboration. Open Sciences opens up scientific processes and products from all levels to everyone. As such it includes Open Access, Open Research Data, Open Methodology, Open Evaluation, Citizen Science.

Open Science During the Pandemic
- In the first few months of the pandemic where COVID19 was brand new and the information on this new disease was developing quickly and constantly being updated, there was an urgent need to get the most up to date information to the front line workers as soon as possible.
- Many vendors and journals understood this need and made their products and services available for free. They even created COVID19 specific resources, searches, and platforms so facilitate the access and discovery of scientific information.
- One of the most notable examples of this is when OVID made their point of care tool UpToDate free to use, which normally is too expensive for many healthcare practitioners.

Introduction
What is OSF?
- OSF is a free, open source web application created by the Center for Open Science (COS) that connects and supports the research workflow, enabling scientists to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their research.
- You can use OSF to collaborate, document, archive, share, and register research projects, materials, and data.
- OSF promotes open, centralized workflows and supports different stages of the research lifecycle, including developing a research idea, designing a study, storing and analyzing collected data, and writing and publishing reports or papers.

OSF REGISTRIES
- OSF Registries is a scholarly repository built for sharing, searching, and aggregating registrations of research.
- Use it to create timestamped registrations of research projects, or discover existing registrations on OSF and across connected registries like ClinicalTrials.gov, Research Registry, and more.
- Register your knowledge synthesis protocol using OSF Registries (be sure to check for existing research before doing so!)

OSF PREPRINTS
- A preprint is a manuscript shared publicy without peer review. Often, preprints are also submitted for peer review and publication in a traditional scholarly journal. Preprints uploaded to OSF Preprints or a community preprint server accelerate scholarly communication and public access.
- Journal peer review can be a slow process! Rapid dissemination of research ideas and data benefits researchers, their funders, and the public. Preprints allow for authors to receive more rapid feedback on their research.
- Sharing preprints openly allows others without access to paywalled journals to discover and read your research, either before or after publication in a journal.
